Hi all. I’m waiting on my new M1a scout. Should be here in the next 10 days or so. I’ll be using it as a ranch/truck gun, deer rifle (mule deer mostly, wild boar from time to time) and I plan to run blanks for some MilSim airsoft events that I admin.

Here’s my current purchase list, what am I missing? What recommendations can you suggest? Anything I should reconsider? I’m not new to guns but I am new to this platform.

Picking up a new scout squad this week and I’m curious what ammo you all prefer in yours. Just shooting paper and steel until next year’s hunting season opens up

Hi all, I live in very rural California and I’m considering the M1a for a truck gun/hunting rifle. I work between two ranches and will primarily use this for hogs (they get real big out here), coyotes, and the occasional deer when it’s in season and I have time to be in the woods for fun.

My question is, is the Scout the best option for my uses? The Socom seems attractive for its smaller size but the shorter barrel length seems like it would detrimental for accuracy at hunting distances.

Also, it’s a $2k dollar rifle, along with mags and a scope mount, what else do I need to budget for to make this field ready? Is glass bedding worth doing right off the bat or are these grouping well enough after an initial cleaning and finding the ammo it likes?

It’ll be primarily for hogs, coyotes, the occasional deer when it’s in season and closer than 100 yards (I know the accuracy is mediocre on these rifles, but even that seems fixable with some barrel work). Anyway, with featureless rifle laws I’m a bit hard pressed for a .224 or larger semi auto deer capable caliber that isn’t well over $1/round
