BLOOD OATH part 1
*rain sounds, heavy breathing from speaker*
“Hey” (pause) “hey, wake up. Are you alive? Fuck. Ok. Shhhh. Be very quiet.”
(pause, then whispered) “No, no, no, its ok. Don’t move. Don’t touch that. Yeah. You’ve got an arrow in your gut. It looks… it looks pretty nasty. Shhh. We have to stay quiet, there are scouts out here looking for survivors. No, I’m fine. Don’t worry about me. Shhh. Gods, you’re bleeding. This is all yours? Shit. There’s so much blood…”
(pause)
“Alright, I need you to brace yourself. I am going to carry you, I am going to get you out of here. You have to stay quiet, and we have to move quickly. They are sweeping the perimeters, and we don’t have much time before they find us here. Be quiet and stay awake. No matter what happens, keep your eyes on me and keep breathing. This is going to hurt like hell. I’m sorry, it's the only way. Bite down on this. It's just my belt. It’ll keep you quiet while we move.”
(pause)
“On three, one, two, three!” (stands up, footstep noises) “I know I know just stay awake. I’m sorry, I’m so sorry, sweetheart. Deep breaths for me. You’ve survived worse, this is nothing.
(pleading) come on, stay awake. Look at me. Hey! (desperately, still whispering harshly) come on, soldier! Wake up. That’s an order. Do not die here in my arms…”
(more footsteps)
(almost angry) “wake up. I will slap you if that’s what it takes. You stay awake… we’re almost there. That’s it! Good girl, keep those eyes open and keep breathing. There’s a cave, and some of the others are meeting us there. If you can hang on just a little while longer, I’ll build a fire and we’ll get that arrow out, and you’ll be up and around throwing your boots at Orion and racing Tallia and Felix and I... You have to fight, you have to live.”
(Voice starting to fade in and out) “Don’t do this to me. We’re almost there.”
(Voice fades out and we hear rain, then a fire crackling, and listener wakes up)
“Woah woah, easy. Easy. Don’t move. Don’t sit up, the arrow is still in there. Do you know where you are? Do you recognize me?”
(Small laugh)
“That’s right, it's me. It’s Levi. Now hold still. You’re still bleeding.”
(sounds of liquid pouring)
“Drink this, slowly. Here I’ll hold you up. It will help with the pain some, but that’s all we have. I hope it’s enough. We can’t spare the alcohol. We have to clean your wounds with that.”
(pause, and footsteps) “Shhh, be very quiet. I don’t know who…. Oh thank Gods… do you hear that? It’s the others. We're here!
(pause) yeah, come to the back of the cave. I found her. She’s hurt… badly. She’s been in and out of it, struggling to breathe. She was unconscious and she was bleeding… from her mouth. I don’t…
(voice breaks, almost tearful) I don’t know if we can fix her. The wound is bad. Is the medic with you? No? Shit.”
(pause)
“Ok, here’s what we’ll do. Felix, and Tallia, hold her legs. Orion, hold under her arms. Put her head in your lap. I gave her the last of the pain elixir. We have to get this arrow out, it could be poisoned. I have to check how deep it went. Hold her.”
(pause)
“I know, I know, sweetheart. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. Almost done. We need to turn her on her side. Help me. Careful!”
(shuffling, pause)
“That’s what I was afraid of. It's deep. It’ll cause more harm to pull it out. We need to break off the shaft, and push it through the other side so the barbs don’t tear her up even more. A clean through and through. It’ll be nasty work but it will save her life.”
(pause, then speaking to the listener) “Darling? How’re you holding up? Are you with us? Hey there, darling. There you are. No no, it’s ok. We’re all here. See? The others survived. We’re going to help you. Relax, it’ll be ok. How much of that were you awake for?”
(Pause) “all of it. Ok. You know the plan. We can knock you out but you’ll have a nasty headache. Or we can give you something to bite down on and do it now. Which would you rather?”
(Pause)
“Ok.” (to the others) “Hold her down. Tightly. Don’t let her move, I can’t risk making her bleed more. First I’m going to pour alcohol over the wound and where the exit wound will be. Hold still, sweetheart. Bite down on my belt. 1, 2-”
(pours alcohol) “I know I’m sorry. Shit, ok, let's break the shaft. This will hurt. Well, it’s all going to hurt. Hold as still as you can sweetheart. Ready?”
(breaks shaft)
“Gods, I’m so sorry. (to others) has she passed out yet?”
(voice start to warp and fade a little)
“I hope she does, and soon. It would be a mercy. Let's hurry and finish this. On three, I’m going to push the arrow through the back and pull it out. Steady now. One, two, three-”
(voices fade more and there is a sharp ringing in listener’s ears)
(very fuzzy and far away) “I think she’s out. Thank the Gods. Let’s stop the bleeding and get her comfortable.”
(voices fade completely out)
(small time skip)
“Darling? I know you’re still out, but the others are asleep so I’m keeping watch over you. You look so peaceful when you sleep. Even like you are, bandaged up and so pale. You’re thinner. Your face looks… gaunt. You haven’t been eating well these last few weeks on campaign. I could tell.
(pause, small laugh) I always could. But now… you seem so quiet laying there. Not at all like the knight I’m used to seeing spar with the others and take down enemies so easily. We should have known our luck was too good. You were too fast, too skilled. Nobody defeated you. We should have known it wouldn’t last forever. You couldn’t have seen that arrow coming.
(pause) I just… wish I had. I would have taken it for you. No second thoughts.”
(long sigh)
“Seeing you rest like this is good though. I feel as though I’ve never seen you really sleep. You’re always trying to slay one proverbial dragon or another. You’ve been different, lately, though. The commission from the King changed something. I want to know what. You would never tell me if I just asked but then… you almost died. I was so scared. I’m still scared. I’m angry. And I am exhausted. You look so fragile. I wrapped your stomach but there is still some blood. We cauterized the wound, and I think that was what finally pushed you fully into unconsciousness. Tallia looked horrified. She was so scared for you. And the others, they were scared too, but they won’t show it. They are worried for me because they know that nobody is as worried as I am for you. You seem like you could vanish out from under those heavy blankets into nothing. That’s how fragile your life is. I’m not used to seeing you like this and it… it terrifies me, sweetheart."
(pause)
"You are such light sleeper but right now you won’t even stir when I speak to you. It’s like talking to a grave. I hate that thought. But it's true… with all the blood loss, you look like a corpse.”
(pause)
“To be honest, I am surprised you didn’t die. I’ve never saved someone’s life before, not like that. And I don’t know if we’ll be safe here. It depends on if the front line holds. I’m sending Tallia and Felix ahead to report to camp so we aren’t marked as missing or deserters. They will send people for us, but we may have to move before then… I guess you should rest up. I should let you rest, and get this fire going again. So just let yourself relax. Get stronger. Sleep.”
(kisses her, softly)
“We both know there are so few times I can kiss you in this war. I hate that you can’t kiss me back. Your skin is so cold…But I’m depending on you to heal up and get stronger, so that when you come to, you can kiss me back. I am living for that moment alone. Rest now, sweetheart. I will watch over you while you sleep.”
