For My Few Manga Storm Holdouts, Help is Coming Soon

Hello to My fellow Manga Storm Holdouts.

As I’m sure many of you know now, with the recent MangaDex updates, it basically bricked a large section of the Manga Storm app.

Out of PURE SPITE and deciding i did not want to hand convert. I had decided 10 days ago that I must build a tool that will allow a Manga Storm backup, the “favorites.msbf” file, to be converted to a “.tachibk” file. I figured this was a better alternative compared to just copying one at a time over. After 20ish hours of thinking and hating my spite, I came to the realization that maybe, the other was easier. But, here we are.

So far, I have been able to get it to do the conversion and pull the metadata for MangaDex ONLY. Yet, I shall try my best to make the other sources that survive in the app to be moveable.

All Metadata being pulled is the following:
- Titles
- Cover Art
- Authors
- Publishing Status
- Description

I’ve been able to get a file of 465 manga from Mangadex converged in about 5-7 minutes on average with the metadata pushed into a “.tachibk” file.

I have tested this on:

- Komikki (full working backup restore)
- tachiyomisy (no metadata but shows chapters on MangaDex.

My plan is to eventually test it on Tachimanga for IOS soon.

What I want to know is what other apps should I test it on? For Android and IOS

Development plan going forward:

V0.3 I am going to make a way to covert the old tags from Manga Storm (Reading, Following, Archived) into Tachi categories (Reading, Following, On Hold) I also plan to auto add Favorite and Dropped tags too.
V0.4 I will make a kind of UI that will be usable on windows to hopefully drag and drop it in to convert it easier. With some customization. It will probably be what you want the new categories to be for tracking reasons.

V0.5
An instruction guide
An improvement request list

V1.0 launch I hope

V1.1 A list of every app that works and how well

V1.5 Eventually I will add other sources from the msbf file to this. I do need to know what sources I should aim to pull from and I will see what I can do.

This may be a wild goose chase and a waist of time, but for the few lads who bet their digital collection on Manga Storm not dying soon. I am doing this for you.

I will be positing the current mostly working link to my GitHub in either a comment or an edit to this post soon. When I can make a “kind of” cleaned out version. So keep an eye out. It’s on v0.2 and I want to get it to at least v0.3

Once 1.0 is done and ready. I will post more about it in a separate post.

Also, if this is the wrong subreddit or if another subreddit might be in use of this. Let me know.

RIP Manga Storm Connection to Mangadex API

So, I’ve been hanging onto this app I found called Manga Storm for a long time. It’s been through many phones and the like. But, just a few days ago, whatever Mangadex did to their API officially killed the app’s connection.

I am absolutely devastated. But now I’m stuck. Because, I have over 450 series I kept track of on that app. I can still pull a database backup that gives me all the URLs, but do I really want to do them one at a time on a new app? Nope. So. I’m stuck. If anyone has any suggestions that would be great.

I know I have to move apps. But what I want to know is how much work has to be done at this point. Because it’s going to be a real pain.

Yet, if I go one by one, is there an app yall recommend that with sync right with MAL? So I don’t have to manually track/ update each of the manga I’m reading. Or, does it connect to Mangadex? And maybe even sync with an account?

I may just be on hopes and dreams at this point. I fear a lot of effort in my future. But, I wanted to ask before I do a crap load of work.

I primarily use IPhone. But I do have an android backup I can use if it works better.
