I recently found my grandfather’s Rolex Daytona that had been sitting for about 30 years. My father also wore it for a time. Both were recreational sailors, so the watch saw real use rather than storage. He passed in 1990 and the watch was away from moisture in my dad’s drawer until 2025.

I’ve started learning more about it and had it looked at. Sharing here to get feedback from people who know these better than I do before I decide how to proceed.

Details:

Rolex Daytona ref. 6265

Serial ~3.9M (early 1970s)

Sigma dial (“T SWISS T”)

Manual wind chronograph

78350 bracelet with 571 end links

Condition:

Honest wear throughout

Dial shows patina and light spidering

Lower chronograph pusher cap is missing

Movement appears clean but the watch likely needs service

I’ve received mixed guidance so far on whether to service it or leave it as-is for collectors, so I’m especially interested in thoughts on that.

Also curious how collectors would view the dial and overall condition in today’s market.

Appreciate any insight.
