What's the safest wine to order for a group?

I've only been at my job for a few months and a group of coworkers invited me out for dinner after work. It’ll be my first time hanging out with them outside the office and from what I can tell, they all know a lot more about wine than I do. The thing is I don't really want to order a cocktail or beer because everyone else is talking about sharing a bottle of wine. I know almost nothing about wine and now I'm overthinking what I should order if they ask for my opinion.

Is there a safe wine that most people generally enjoy? When you're ordering for a group, do you go with something light, something crowd pleasing or does it completely depend on who's there? I feel like there’s probably an obvious answer that experienced wine drinkers know but I definitely don’t.

Best wine for people who don’t actually like wine?

I think the best wine for people who don’t like wine is usually something lighter, smoother and a little fruit forward instead of the super dry wine snob stuff people always recommend first. A lot of beginners get handed really tannic reds or super acidic wines and immediately decide they hate wine altogether. Meanwhile, something slightly sweeter or easier drinking would probably give them a way better first impression. I’ve also noticed that people who say they hate wine usually just haven’t found the style they actually enjoy yet. There’s such a huge difference between wines that it almost feels weird grouping them all together. Curious what wines converted other non wine drinkers.
