My manager made a hollow threat that we were/needed to do a behavioral sit-down, so I responded in an confident yet bold (unusual for me) manner, stating that "Yes, Lets. While I have my lunch in 5 minutes after that I'm free to chat." I felt that his perceived reasoning for why this behavioral was a little absurd, as it was because a customer didn't choose to purchase something after I'd greeted them- so I was confident in that it seemed like an unreasonable threat made under the assumption that it'd get me to work harder to close a sale, and that I wouldn't have much of a backbone.
He then looked a bit awkward for a moment, said it was a joke, asked if I was joking (I said I was serious) and then told others that I'd snapped on him and spoken to him in a rude tone, and that I should never take that tone with a manager, as he wouldn't with his. To be clear, I made no personal statements, and what I said above is exactly what I said- admittedly in a tone that was a bit pointed.
We did eventually hash it out and spoke about staff as a whole feeling undervalued, but now I'm worried it'll threaten my job and my relationship to my co-workers.... Does anyone have any advice? How could I handle this situation better in the future? Is there anyway I can still salvage this? I like my manager and still want a positive, friendly working relationship with him.
