Is it just me, or is Reginald’s writing in Chapter 5 a bit too "edgy" to be taken seriously?
I’ve been playing through Demo 5 and, while I loved (most) of it, I’m finding myself really frustrated with how Elite Commander Reginald was handled.
I understand what the writers were going for: he’s the traditionalist, the "tough guy" who doesn't trust outsiders and views Cassie as an unfit successor to King Kleos. On paper, that’s a great dynamic for conflict. But in execution? He feels less like a stern commander and more like a poorly written "edgy" antagonist. Hear me out.
Here are a few reasons why I think his character feels a bit "off":
He’s Unreasonably Dismissive: By the time we reach the Citadel, the player has already done quite the heavy lifting. Even if he’s a "by-the-books" guy, his refusal to acknowledge the player’s combat prowess feels less like "high standards" and more like he’s just being a jerk for the sake of the plot.
The Timing of His Hostility: The Korblox threat is at an all-time high. You’d think a high-ranking Commander would prioritize the survival of the Citadel over bullying Cassie. The way he talks down to her—especially considering she’s grieving her father—doesn't make him look "tough," it just makes him look like a "bully" without a cause.
The "Edgy" Dialogue: A lot of his lines feel like they’re trying too hard to be intimidating. It lacks the nuance that characters like Robur or Azuri have. They have authority, but they feel like people. Reginald feels like a trope of sorts
I feel like he would have been a much stronger character if his distrust was based on pragmatism rather than just being an angry gatekeeper.
What do you guys think tho?? Could be just me, but it's personally how i feel about the execution of reginald's character.
