[Chain of Feathers] Did anyone else feel frustrated at this too?
First of all, I’m really enjoying the series overall. And that sudden turn with Prince Isaac and Matteo back in book 3 was honestly insanely fun to read. Didn’t expect it at all.
But there’s one thing that’s been bothering me for a while now, mainly with Matteo, Rose, and Eric.
Back in book 1, they had that whole heart-to-heart conversation where they shared personal stuff to build trust. One of the things they shared was their root card ranks. Matteo revealed his was Iron, which felt like a pretty vulnerable thing for him to admit. Then Rose and Eric said theirs were Silver and Gold.
Now in book 4, we suddenly find out they were both lying the whole time, and their cards were actually one rank higher.
And honestly, it kinda annoyed me.
Because throughout the series, Rose and Eric are always wanting Matteo to share more secrets with them. They get kind frustrated, when he hides stuff, Matteo keeps thinking about how he should trust them more, etc. Like with the Sorcerer spell, and now the evolving root card thing too. Even recently they were kinda pushing him to explain it.
Meanwhile THEY were hiding something huge from the start lol.
And honestly, the reveal didn’t even feel natural to me. It kinda felt like the author realized Rose and Eric would fall too far behind Matteo power-wise, so their root cards suddenly got upgraded retroactively so they can keep up.
Maybe I’m just overthinking it because I still like the series a lot. But this reveal felt weirdly frustrating to me.
Did anyone else feel this way or am I reading too much into it?
