The man and the wolf (or hyena or other wild creature that wants to eat you) seemed to grow up together or were just there in the forest. It may also be that the man was kicked out of the village. The man could not defeat the wolf 1 on 1, he ran into the rocks, the wolf jumped after him and got his head stuck between the rocks or just gets stuck in the rocks and can’t squeeze through. The hero killed him while he was trapped. This was presented as a triumph of intelligence over strength, like he outplayed the beast. And that this is the arc of the development of a character who supposedly knows how to win. The story can be a secondary story rather than the main plot
