What “ugly” trends have you fully embraced, now or in the past?

No yuckin someone’s yum over here!
Some trends seem to be practically universally hated. Yet, you love them nonetheless. Can be a new trend or old, you might still like them or not. I just want to know which ones you’ve fallen for over the years.

Jorts and anything jorts adjacent: Shorts that hit below the knee?? I was 100% on the hate train until recently and I do like to try on ugly clothes just to see how ridiculous they look on me. I grabbed a pair of long ass jorts from GAP and then proceeded to cackle in the dressing room at how much I loved them. They’re silly af and hit right at that sweet spot many of my favorite midi skirts hit. I like how these work for my vertically challenged self. I have three pairs now.

Baggy, falling off your ass, slouchy jeans: Tbf, I lived in men’s 501’s through the late 90’s-2010’s. So easily being able to find some mid and low rise boyfriend cut slouchy jeans that can be slung low on my waist has been a godsend. Do they make me look tall and elongated? As my 6’ tall grandma would say- “honey, you look stout”. That’s fine. I can’t really hide the fact that I’m 5’2”.

Barrel cut jeans and pants: unflattering? I look bow legged? Oh, sorry, I can’t hear you- I’m marinating in the feeling of my pants not touching my legs. Plus, the regular lengths tend to be pretty “cropped”. So they usually hit a hair above my ankle bone and I don’t need to hem the damn things.

Tabi shoes: this is another oldie but goodie for me. I’ve been marching around town in those fugly Nike Air Rifts since the very early 2000’s. That was another trend I saw and was like “Yes! It’s hideous! I must try them!”. Have been made fun of for them many times? Understatement. I was instantly nicknamed La Cabra when I showed up to my first Easter brunch with my (now) ex’s family. But I just can’t quit this style and am enjoying that it’s making its rounds again. I love tabi style shoes- sneakers, ballet flats, boots, don’t care. They’re comfy. Gimme all them hoof feet and I have a whole collection of socks to go with them. Ain’t nothin sillier than sliding around your house in tabi socks.

Statement belts: ohhhh those giant belts from 2005-2010’s. I soooo wanted to be like the cool boho girls but I just wasn’t. Especially pairing any of those ludicrously wide belts with the men’s 501’s on my short waisted self. Truly, not the easiest trend for petites. I look back on pictures from this time frame and just laugh. But honestly? That’s why I love some of these trends. Sure, it looks dated as hell now. But it definitely looks like I was embracing the present and having fun back then.
