Higher price with no x-rays

I have a ten year old very health sphynx(he's a half-breed who ended up being furless so no HCM!!!) who has what we believe to be an abscess tooth. I've been to see his regular vet and a secondary vet that could do a dental a week and a half quicker.

His surgery was suppose to be tomorrow with the secondary vet, but on the phone they told me they can not do x-rays. The kicker is that there quote is 1,300 while his regular vets range is between $851 to $1100 with bloodwork and x-rays included. We live in a low income area, so this is right on the money for the cost of vet work here, and they are considered the best vet in the area. I've worked with animals in the past, but it's been a few years. I'm not sure if there's new technology, but I thought x-rays where standard and one of the reasons dental prices are so high. I know that cats have deep roots, and asked how they could be certain it's extracted properly and there was no reabsorption. The answer was "they can just see it.

Should I cancel and work with him to the other appointment, or is there new tech that would make tomorrows work 100% safe. The high cost without the x-rays makes me feel like I'm being Sphynx taxed, I also couldn't afford to do another surgery after this, we have already spent $500 easy on both consultation and medicine before this, and are extremely fortunate to have an emergency fund for him.

Update: We went ahead and cancelled and his original vet expedited pain medication to us. Thanks everyone for your advice, I just wanted to make the best call for his health!
