In the late 1940s, many B-29 Stratofortresses were modified and converted into passenger jets for Pan Am.
The airline offered the luxurious Stratocruiser service with ample space and generous meals. However, there were some drawbacks, such as the deafening noise of the four piston engines, which sometimes malfunctioned. The transatlantic flight took about 15 hours and cost several thousand dollars in today's dollars. The arrival of jets in the late 1950s reduced the same flight time to just a few hours and cost less, bringing an end to the B-29's era as a passenger aircraft.
