Purchasing in CA: what else do I need to consider?

Swung by Turner’s this weekend to get some snake load in .22 and .45LC. I don’t have a Real ID and I didn’t think to bring my passport - that’s my fault, I just happened to think about the ammo while we were driving by. So my wife has a real ID, asks if she can buy it. “Do you own a firearm?” “Yes.” He does some typing. “Has it been more than 5 years since you bought a gun?” “Yes, 8 years I think.” He sort of grimaces. “So, you can’t buy ammo unless you’ve bought a gun in the last 5 years.” I said, “so if we don’t need a gun right now, how do we get ammo for the guns we already have?” You can’t. According to the clerk, that’s DOJ law now. Is that countrywide, or just CA? I also see that starting July 1, you must store all guns in a DOJ approved safe, regardless of whether or not children are present. Can we just show the receipt? How is compliance going to work? What else is coming? I’ve been considering a Remington 870 for a while. My handgun cert is expired. Do I need it for a shotgun now? Anything else I might need to consider, that’s changed since my last revolver purchase in 2018?
