How can I make these look better?

Ive been trying to dutch braid but my hair is still pretty short so I cant get it into two. Ive been playing around with smaller braids which are super fun & turn out a lot neater for some reason. But I think bigger braids are better suited for my hair type. Any Tips for beginners? Whenever I do less than 4 or five they look so messy and frizzy. they also fall out much faster.

How long could I hold a protective style?

For context, I have never had my hair braided or put in any kind of protective hairstyle. I was told that braided style could cause damage to my hair. After having a baby last year I cut it all short cause it felt like too much maintenance. Now it's too short to style, can't hold a wash and go, it's frizzy all the time. I feel like a protective hairstyle would help a lot. Even something that could hold for just 3-4 days. But I'm not sure if I have the right texture? Its very very dense, holds a 3a-3b curls.when it was longer I always wished I could do mini twists or box braids but I don't even know what it can do now its short. And definitely don't want to cause damage to my hair.
