Seeking help with Podcasts, Clips of podcasts, and Social Media for marketing

Hi Everybody,

CPA and CFP® here. I run my own CPA firm and RIA together so compliance fully falls on me. I am trying to be in compliance with SEC level laws, and I'm having issues finding a lawyer for this area. My only sources of help are reddit/Ai and google.

I will eventually be doing podcasts, in person trainings, online webinars, and podcasts to help get new clients and help get my name out there. Any info here would be generic, or made up examples for concepts.

Am I able to post clips off my self doing the above on social media so more people see me, and still be in compliance with the SEC? Is there any disclosures or items I need to do?

Any help here is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Seeking Help With Video Testimonals

Hi Everybody,

I plan to be doing video testimonials for my CPA practice, and would want to do the same for my RIA. I also would like to be in compliance with the SEC for the video testimonials. If anybody could help shed some light on how to be compliant with the SEC for video testimonials it would be a huge help.

from what i saw so far is that I should avoid it, as the SEC is very very strict.

Edit 1: not sure why is being downvoted for seeking help with a tough area. Tough crowd.

Flat Fee Retainer vs AUM

Hi everybody,

I am highly looking to a model where there is a flat fee retainer in tiers based on complexity or assets or combination and/or AUM in tiers based upon assets. If you can provide insight on your thoughts on this, it would be most appreciated. So far I only met 2 financial advisors who do this, and they were relatively new to the game.

Details on what I do I am a tax CPA and CFP®. I run my own tax firm and RIA. Both of which are based on being proactive, instead of reactive. I bill for my CPA services at 50% upfront, 50% upon completion currently. When I have a more established client base it will be 100% upfront. I am doing full data integration where every software I use must talk to each other, and show the data inside Karbon hq. I discovered the flat fee retainer billed yearly/momthly/quaterly/semi yearly as my project management software (Karbon Hq) can’t do AUM billing due to custody issues. By doing the flat fee model this would also save me in software costs as I won’t need a dedicated RIA billing software like Orion.

Update on the 1/50,000 event during birth

Hi Everybody,

This is an update on the post below which was about 10-11 days ago at the time of me posting it this.

I want to give a special thank you to all who messaged me, posted their story, and offered to have a call with me. The support on r/daddit and r/nicu was truly amazing. I followed all of your advice on what to do, and found new strength in my self I could have imagined. so thank you again for your help, words can not really express how appreciative I am for your support.

Update:
Like all you said the wait and not knowing was the worst of it. There were so many sleepless nights, and me rushing between 2 hospitals to see my wife and daughter.

As I didn’t process it all at the time, I recorded as much as I could, took notes, fed it all into Claude to help assist, and wow did this help so much. Getting it out of my head was a huge life saver, and I prolly would be so much worse if I didn’t do this.

I found myself constantly just wanting to be by my daughter’s side for as long as possible. I knew all the nurses and doctors, as they would just see me daily for hours with her. My wife always had friends and family over so after my morning visit and bagel drop off, I rushed over to the nicu in another hospital. Nurses and doctors ended up knowing my name, and what I do after whiled and I think I got a few clients out of it. Who knew doctors and nurses and volunteers needed a lot of tax and financial help in the nicu. most of the time I had my iPad with me and headphones, just sitting by my daughters side and working on my business. I wanted to know everything going on, and what test results meant and what they are looking for. Doctors and nurses were very surprised I asked all these questions and still kept it together. before reaching out to the social workers I broke down a lot, this was a huge help.

The warming period of 12 hours I think was my worst day after both my girls were in the icu and nicu. I stayed as long as I could, then got kicked out after shift change. I barely had any sleep during this time, I was a very nervous person. right before this we got the organ test results and ultrasound test results and docs kept saying brain damage; but the organ tests came back great. During this period I was a nervous wreck, and my big victory here was not calling the hospital every hour to find out what happened. the next day when I was there I fell asleep next to my daughter and was doing the whole “I’m awake” right as I felt myself dozing off. Once I heard the warning monitoring period was done and docs said no seizures detected and I breathed a sigh of relief.

More waiting on the MRI to happen, still nervous dad mode. But I was now hopeful since there was so many posture signs; and so many stories of great outcomes posted by yall. Again I can’t thank you enough tor this. MRI came and went and the minute the doc said mri looks good to great was the first chance I gave my self relax. Soon after this daughter was loved to step down unit, began to act like a normal baby, and my toddler gave me strep throat so I was not even allowed back in the hospital as

My wife in the icu I was most surprised about, as the docs said to me originally 2-3 days under sedation. Her determination and a weird dream of somebody telling her to wake up made her wake up in under 24 hours. i was totally shocked to see her awake when i got to her the next day, and could not even imagine how scared she was. The look of fear on her eyes waking up an alone and not knowing was another low point for me. I would have stayed all night but docs told me to home and sleep. Since this point my wife was determined to see her daughter and is recovering really well since.

I took both my girls home today, and both are doing really well and they are both healhly.

Thanks reading and being those amazing people you
Are.

My wife and newborn daughter are both in the ICU after a 1-in-50,000 birth complication. I feel alone in this, I'm a wreck and I don't know what to do.

I don't even know how to write this. Today my wife went into labor and everything was normal. She was fully dilated, the midwife had felt the head, and then within minutes everything fell apart. She had a spontaneous uterine rupture about a 1-in-50,000 thing and got rushed into an emergency C-section under general anesthesia. The last thing I saw was her screaming my name as they took her, and I couldn't be in the room.

Because of the rupture, our daughter had a period of compromised blood flow to her brain during delivery. To save my wife's life they had to do an emergency hysterectomy. Both of them made it. My wife is in the ICU now, stable, expected to fully recover physically, but she won't be awake until Sunday or Monday which means I'm going to be the one who has to tell her everything when she wakes up.

Our daughter got transferred to a children's hospital NICU. She's stable and on the cooling protocol to protect her brain, on a ventilator, sedated. They suspect seizures. We won't know if there's any brain damage until an MRI in about a week. When I touched her hand today it was cold and still and I can't get that image out of my head, even though I know it's because they're keeping her cold on purpose.

I'm home alone tonight (our toddler son is safe with his grandparents). I keep blaming myself even though I know logically I didn't cause this. I keep imagining the worst. I wanted so badly to hold her on my chest and make her a promise like I did with my son and I couldn't even do that.

I guess I'm asking: has anyone been through HIE / the cooling protocol / a NICU stay like this with their kid? How did you get through the waiting? How did you not fall apart? And for the dads who've had to be the strong one while their wife recovered how did you do it? I feel completely lost and I just need to hear from people who've stood where I'm standing.

Thank you. I don't know what else to do right now except reach out.

I will respond to everybody when I can, and make general edits in post to help with questions. I am pretty messed up atm, thanks for understanding.

Edit 1: wow this blew up while I cried my self to sleep. Thank you so much for all your support. Will respond when I can.

Edit 2: 24 hours later. Wife is breathing on her own and recovering.

What is the easiest way to start your own RIA?

Hi Everybody,

CPA and CFP® here. I currently run my own tax firm. My attempts to join an existing RIA have pretty much blown up in flames for all I applied to.

I will be starting my own RIA, will be fee only.

Services I will be providing
AUM
Financial planning
Tax return filing
Tax projections
Tax planning

Any help on this is welcome. I am pretty lost on what to do. Lawyers want to charge me 10-15k of which I don’t have.

From googling and talking with Ai I need to do the below, not sure in what order.
Form U4
Adv part 1 and 2
A pamflet for my services
disclosures of unrelated business (tax firm)
Engagement letters
Disengagement letters
Form a LLC
Get E&o insurance

Software:
Right capital

Billing:
I’m hoping to be able to do billing through my tax PM/CRM or through ignition for AUM fees. What software would be best for this?

Hi Everybody,

CPA and CFP® here. I run my own tax and accounting firm, and will be opening up my own RIA this month.

Couple questions for yall, as I’m planning for the long term, and least amount of stress.

  1. Can anybody recommend good broker dealers to associate with, and why they are good for an independent person like myself?

  2. what is needed to pass compliance usually? I have specific tax software and project management software to help assist with both companies. for example data retention policy, security, sox complaint?

  3. for ease of onboard for future advisors, which is best to learn?

  4. is there a recommended service that can setup the RIA and compliance for me like legal zoom?

Bonus:

  1. This is more of a wish list and time saving item. Which broker statements have the best breakouts on muni bonds for their 1099s?
