Surgical rant. Opinions?

Hi all. I am currently a surgical registrar in general surgery. I cant help but notice differences in surgical performance of my consultants. Certain consultants treat the surgery as Art and handle it with such finesse. You can tell it’s their craft. On the contrary, certain consultant surgeons rush the case, can be wreck-less at times and raise significant safety concerns. I am still baffled how extreme the differences are in their performance, despite completing the same training. I have also noticed that Junior consultants who have finished their training early on ( i..e From graduation straight into Consultant post CCT) share the same surgical skills and manner as the other consultants who rush their procedure.

I welcome any comments from others who would like to build on this or provide their perspective on how they see the situation

Hi everyone,
I’m curious to get some perspective from the consultants here (both Medical and Surgical) regarding how you perceive and evaluate the juniors rotating through your firms.
We all know the stereotypes, but when you’re on a busy ward round or in theater, how much of an impression do they actually make on you?
The Standouts: Do you actively notice the "star" F1 who is two steps ahead, or the Reg who has exceptional clinical judgment?

The Archetypes: How do you handle the "eccentric" types, the hyper-intelligent but socially awkward ones, or the ones who are clearly just doing the bare minimum to get their portfolio signed off?

The Watercooler Talk: Do you actually discuss the performance and personalities of your juniors with your fellow consultants? Is there a "reputation" that follows certain trainees, or do you tend to keep your professional judgments to yourself unless there’s a serious safety concern?

I'm interested in whether the "hard worker" is still the gold standard, or if you value efficiency and "cleverness" over staying late to finish TTOs.
Looking forward to some honest (and hopefully anonymous) insights!
