B58 into E90/E92 — realistic parts list & costs from someone who's done the swap

Seeing way more interest in B58 swaps into E9x chassis lately so figured I'd drop the real breakdown.

Minimum parts list:
• B58B30 longblock (F30 340i donor, 2016-2018 for N20/N63 era ECU compatibility)
• ZF 8HP50 transmission from same donor
• Complete engine wiring harness (do NOT try to piece this together)
• F30 front subframe OR custom motor mounts ($800-1500 fabricated)
• Standalone ECU (SCS Delta GDI6 ~$3K) OR modified OEM DME ($500-800 + coding)
• Custom cooling system (expansion tank relocated, hoses adapted)
• HPFP fuel system adaptation
• Custom exhaust manifolding
• AC compressor bracket/relocation

Realistic total cost ranges:
- Doing most work yourself: $12,000-$18,000
- Some shop labor for fab/wiring: $18,000-$25,000
- Full shop build: $30,000-$45,000

The biggest money pit is the "small stuff" — custom brackets, specialty fasteners, sensors, programming hours at $150/hr add up FAST.

I put the entire 19-phase build documentation at b58swapbible . com — everything from which donor year to pick (2016-2018 has simplest CAN) to the first-start checklist.

Ask away if you're in the research phase. Happy to help avoid the mistakes I made.

B58 into an E92 — documenting the 19-phase swap process for anyone planning one

Been through a B58 swap into an E92 chassis and wanted to share the full phase breakdown since I see questions about this popping up more often.

The swap in 19 phases:
1. Donor selection (2016-2018 F30 340i preferred — simpler CAN)
2. Parts sourcing & budgeting
3. Donor teardown (engine + trans + harness)
4. Recipient chassis prep
5. Subframe/modification
6. Motor mount fab
7. Engine installation
8. Transmission mounting (8HP50 adaptation)
9. Cooling system rerouting
10. Fuel system (HPFP, lines, regulator)
11. Exhaust routing
12. Wiring harness integration
13. CAN-bus bridging (B58 DME ↔ E9x body modules)
14. ECU strategy (modified OEM vs standalone)
15. Instrument cluster integration
16. HVAC & accessory drives
17. Programming & coding
18. Pre-start checklist
19. First start & break-in

The 3 things nobody warns you about:
- CAN bridging between B58 DME and E9x KOMBI/FRM modules is where you'll spend the most time
- E9x trailing arms weren't designed for 335hp+ torque — serious subframe reinforcement needed
- The ZF 8HP transmission tunnel geometry doesn't match between F30 and E9x

I documented everything at b58swapbible . com — free to browse the phase overview. Happy to answer questions for anyone planning or mid-build.
