When to call crate training quits?

Context about my dog- 4 month old goldendoodle whom I’ve had for 3 weeks. She slept in a crate at the breeder’s house but it was with her other 2 litter mates that hadn’t gotten adopted yet.

I posted a couple of weeks ago about struggling with crate training and I got a lot of helpful advice! However it seems like nothing I do is working. I’ve researched videos of people crate training their dogs with separation anxiety and even dogs that are older and had never been crate trained. I’ve followed along but the past couple of days it seems like it’s gotten worse:

  1. I was feeding her inside her crate but now she drags both her water and food bowl out, spilling it everywhere. LOL now I’ve just been putting her food bowl in there and letting her drag it out
  2. She’s started shaking in the crate 2 days ago. It starts when I pick her up and put her in (she doesn’t go in on her own despite us practicing “crate” and me throwing a treat in. I think she knows she’s going in for real and I’m going to shut the door). Or she shakes while she’s in the crate.
  3. She drools A LOT. I’m talking completely soaking her front chest and legs. Stuffed toys will get soaked to the point I think she pees on them (it’s not, I’ve checked).
  4. She was pooping in the crate, despite me taking her out before. Now we go on a walk before hand so I know she gets EVERYTHING out.
  5. It seems like she’s gotten more destructive. She’s been ripping up her blanket in there.

For content here’s what I’ve been doing:

  1. Feeding all meals in crate (see #1 above)
  2. Giving her enrichment toys in the crate like pupsicle and kong.
  3. x2 a day I say “crate” and throw a treat in multiple times. She barely stays in for 2 seconds, immediately walks out. I’ve also been rewarding her for interacting with the crate in any way (sniffing it or going in on her own).
  4. Putting my hand in the crate at night. I was given this advice, told that I would be able to wean her off eventually and it was just like taking baby steps. She doesn’t even like my hand anymore.
  5. We have tried 10-30 minute sessions as well as sleeping in at night. She wakes up multiple times during the night. An issue is that I have to be in class and she’s been crated for up to 4 hrs this past week.

So what do I do? I feel terrible bc I think I’m causing her way too much stress. Do I abandon crate training? I do need her contained during the day while I’m in school. My parents dogs LOVE their crates and it’s their safe space. I just wanted that for her but we are struggling so much.

Hi! Ok so I want to preference this with saying I have only had my puppy for a week. I know it is too ambitious for her to be crate trained by now. I just feel like I’m not doing it right. She’s a 4 month old goldendoodle. Until last week she had been with her mom and a few of her littermates that hadn’t gotten adopted. So maybe this is playing a role in how crate training is going.

Every time I put her in the crate while I’m home— she’s whining. Even if she can hear me. I know you’re not supposed to take them out if they’re barking/crying so as soon as she is quiet for a few seconds, I take her out. I’ve tried to keep her in there for 45 minutes to an hour.

At night time— it takes about 30 minutes to an hour for her to settle. She’s only slept one night with me not sleeping on the floor outside her crate. The crate was in my living room but I’ve moved it into my bedroom now.
HOWEVER- last night was hella rough. She cried for about an hour then fell asleep. Then an hour later, one of my neighbors slammed their door (I live in an apartment complex) and it woke her up. She then cried some more so I took her out to go potty and put her back in her crate. She cried for another 30 minutes. At this point it was 11:30pm and I just wanted to sleep so I took her out of her crate and let her sleep in the bed with me. Did I mess everything up??

Today I had class so I watched her through a camera. She cries for a bit, then settles, then repeats.

I have brown noise on, I’ve tried enrichment toys, she has a few items that smells like her litter and her favorite toy (lambchop).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Also how long did it take to crate train your dogs? I guess I just want to know there’s light at then end of the tunnel
