When did your toddler move to their own bed/ room?
Hi all! This is my first post so apologies if I write any of this incorrectly. Looking for advice maybe? Other people’s experiences?
My daughter is just about to hit 15 months and has never been a good sleeper. She’s always breastfed to sleep and contact napped. Once she hit around 7/8 months I was at my wits end and couldn’t get through the night without falling asleep holding her (at this point she was waking hourly and 30 minutes of that I was holding her to get her into a good sleep before transferring her) . It was getting scary so I decided to adjust her cot buy removing a side and attaching it to my side of the bed so we would co-sleep without her actually being on my mattress.
This worked so well! I no longer had to get up to put her back to sleep so when she wakes I just feed her laying down and we go back to sleep.
She’s now 15 months old, still breastfeeding, still contact naps and is still attached to the bed. On a good night now she only wakes maybe 3 times but it’s normally easy to get back to sleep. She still has rough patches but again our current set up makes it a lot easier for me to get as much rest as I can and she seems to be sleeping much better.
Anyway I’m now stuck on where to go from here. Part of me is thinking ‘if it ain’t broke’ but my partner and I would like to try for another baby in the next year and we obviously can’t still be sleeping like this when that day comes.
I think I’m worried because I don’t want to have to force her out when there is another baby and would like to make sure she has plenty of time to settle into her own room/ sleeping by herself before that happens. I also wouldn’t mind enjoying a little time being able to move freely while sleeping before a new baby and I’m doing this all over again!
Has anyone made the transition from a similar sleeping arrangement ? When and how did you do it? Am I overthinking this and should just leave things as they are until she seems ready? How do you even know they are ready? She’s my first baby so I have no idea what I’m doing!
