Dog Seems Paralyzed After Abdominal Surgery
Our 11 year old dog (large 85 lb 11 year old mix) had surgery Tuesday. They went in thinking she had internal bleeding from her spleen and planned to remove a hematoma and her spleen. It turned out to be a grapefruit sized abscess.
We speak to the vet and he said she doesn’t want to walk… we think that’s normal she’s probably in pain. He does X-rays to check and says it looks okay and probably her arthritis, hip pain and anesthesia. We are stunned when they bring her out to the car. Her whole hind end was limp.
The first night was rough. She isn’t moving her legs or tail at all and we watched over and changed pee pads, cleaned her with wipes and move her position when needed. We contacted the vet in the morning and he asked us to bring her back. He pinched her with forceps and got a reaction. He put her on steroids and an IV and did more X-rays and bloodwork which all came out okay. We picked her up end of day and she at least slept or rested more tonight but still no movement. She won’t eat.
I’m absolutely terrified she won’t get movement back. Have you seen this before? She is going back to the hospital today for more steroids and we will start looking into specialist
