Grandma’s Bialetti Part 2

Update: I have cleaned Grandma’s Bialetti. I used citric acid powder to clean both the lower water chamber and the top coffee reservoir to eliminate any oxidizing aluminum. I use a dish wand brush to clean out the filters and the basket. I used very fine steel wool to get into any corners and to remove the deteriorated rubber gasket which over the years melded into the aluminum threading. I did two cycles at low heat with citric acid in it and then another two cycles with just water to clean out any remaining critic acid left over. In all, it took me about 4 hours to clean from beginning to end.

One thing I noticed is that this 60 year 9-cup Bialetti basket is designed differently than modern day 9-cup baskets. This old one has a basket which funnels down in size into the siphon stem while the modern baskets are a basket with a tight one sized siphon stem all the way through. It will be interesting to do some tests to see how the old basket performs in comparison to modern baskets.

Grandma’s Bialetti

This is my grandmother’s Bialetti. It has sentimental value to me from growing up. Should I keep it and try to restore it somehow or just toss it. It’s about 60 years old. Honest opinions appreciated.
