Huxley and Hiro Bookstore turns THREE: Our party tomorrow (new local artist collabs!), + an awesome cat & horror event Sunday (no cats will be harmed!!)

Hi all,

Huxley and Hiro turns THREE this month, and we are so grateful for the support we've received from the community. We do our best to pay it forward whenever we can by supporting and partnering with community organizations including many non-profits whenever we can. We also partner with lots of local artists, and we've received a lot of requests for more LOCALLY made and designed products.

So for our third anniversary, we hope you'll come join us at The Little Huxley (our gift shop in the DuPont Building) on Thursday from 7-9 for free drinks, food, a DJ, and great local artists. We'll be launching our new DEL·aware? merch line in collaboration with Other Industries, Noshooe, Create Magic, and Ghoul Crafts.

RSVP HERE. (You're welcome to bring more people, just figuring out the number for drinks/food!)

We'll be featuring:

  • Huxley and Hiro shirts and sweaters
  • Huxley and Hiro and DEL·aware? beanies for winter
  • Retro Kalmar Nyckel shirts by Kacey Quillen of Noshooe
  • Retro "Shop Wilmington" tote of historic local brands like Happy Harry's, screen printed LIVE during the party by Other Industries
  • Mini totes hand-stamped from an original lino of Huxley & Hiro carved by Ari of Ghoul Crafts
  • H&H baseball caps with Create Magic's "Stay Weird" drawing
  • Brand new stickers by Kacey Quillen (check out her new seasonal Happy Harry's sticker!)
  • H&H mugs
  • Lots more!

Also joining us is Gabrielle Estel, who is partnering with us for literary trips, and DJ DUSTY FINGERS will be spinning records!

Plus, come meet our new social media coordinator Ulises (yes we tried to hire the most literary sounding applicant haha), and chat with our events manager Tim about things like renting the bookstore for highly affordable micro weddings, photo shoots, birthday parties, etc.

We also have an amazing event coming up Sunday with our favorite horror author Cassandra Khaw. (If you know our bookseller Eileen, she's probably already told you about her books!) We had to bribe her with cat-petting, so she will be sharing the spotlight with the bookstore Maine Coons The Original Huxley, Tolstoy the Bear, and Lews Therin Kinslayer. Sign up here.

Even if you can't join us this week, we hope you know how much we appreciate your support, your excitement about our local artists, your willingness to come out to shop local instead of ordering online, and your participation in our events year round. We are nothing without you!

Cheers,

Claire, Jason, and Ryan (who says hi from Japan where he is currently teaching at Temple U Kyoto!)

Nebula-winning fantasy author (also a great advocate for the queer and disability communities!) joining us at Huxley & Hiro tomorrow (Thursday)

Hey Wilmington, hope you're surviving the heat and humidity!

I just wanted to jump in real quick tonight and tell you about John Wiswell, best-selling author but also all around super cool guy. We've done a Zoom with him before, and he's the nicest person, and now he's coming to Wilmington to talk about The Dragon Has Some Complaints, a humorous novel about how a dragon whose three heads bear rather…different…personalities finds family in the most unexpected of places.

He's a huge advocate for people with disabilities, for the queer community (he identifies as aro/ace which is a combination underrepresented in lit), and he just writes and speaks beautifully about found families and life as a neurodivergent person. Due to his disability, it's also kind of rare that we have a chance to host him in person, so we are thrilled about that.

Our event with him is totally free, with no requirement to buy the book (our awesome libraries carry his books too), and I simply want to tell you that he's an all-around special person who's worth listening to and meeting, even if you have not yet read his books. So come join us :)
