Tips on sabre grip

I was lucky enough to get the Sigi sabre pro guard around november 2025 (ordered march 2025) and have been loving it so far… My only gripe is that the grip feels too thin in my hand. When I fence I feel like the sword turns too easily in my hand and it messes up my edge alignment and gets tiresome quickly. My other sabres have thicker grips and I don’t have the same problem. I have always preferred thicker grips; for instance I feel like the arming sword grip feels better in my Castille armory basket hilt than the intended PLA contoured grip.

I hold the sabre in a handshake grip and sometimes put my thumb on the backstrap. It’s possible the problem is from my technique (I would love to hear your thoughts about this if it’s the case) but I would also like to explore some other physical solutions.

I have ordered a new Sigi sabre with a thicker grip. How could I go about making the grip of this sabre thicker?

I wrapped the handle of my Sigi King (because I found its grip abnormally thin too) in hockey tape and this worked great. How can I go about thickening the grip of my sabre without going over the backstrap with tape? Are there some obvious solutions I am missing?

I guess that in the worst case I could try replacing the grip but I do not have experience or the tools required to make a new one.
