Julius Caeser Beginner Tips

I have just 26 hours in the game, and recently picked up the Apostle discounted bundle on steam + 2k account link.

Mostly the maps I've played have been huge+, TSL or Continents. I have the extended map size steam mod enabled.

Are there any specific strats I should know on Julius? I've spammed trade routes before on Trajan, but it was on the easiest difficulty.

My main issue at the moment is that most of the time, amenities fall behind as I focus on trade route specific research and production.

Should I settle a few cities and rush trade routes at start, evenly distribute research production, or something else?

Any tips/ideas are greatly appreciated. I will be starting a new game with Caesar soon and will put the advice into play.
