My Cat struggles with Marking, any insights on Cat behaviorists (and possible success stories?)
Hi guys,
Just as the title says, I have a male orange tabby (turning 7 this year!) who consistently marks inside the house and I’m almost at my whits end.
To give context, I have two cats who are from the same litter, a boy and a girl. They were bonded siblings and were rly close until 2023.
In 2023, We had cousins coming over from out of state and unbeknownst to my siblings and I, My mother, who (at the time) wasn’t really well-versed on cat introductions, gave my aunt the go ahead to bring her cat along with them.
These are our family cats, and they were pandemic kittens if that helps give more context. So they were already nervous around people, but when my aunt came in with her cat (male, who is approx the same age as my cats), instantly started fighting with my boy cat.
Throughout the duration of the trip and to my annoyance, what ultimately ended up happening was I was forced to confine my boy cat in one room while my aunts cat was allowed to free roam the space. This is where the marking war began.
After they left, the problem still continued with my orange tabby marking despite cleaning all of the marked areas. And to this day (2026) he still continues to display this behavior of marking.
The consistent marking and misplaced aggression affected my cats relationship with each other as well, my parents suggested we give them away but I can’t just give my baby away. Especially my baby boy who’s extremely fond of me.
My orange tabby is neutered, and he’s been neutered since we got him 6 years ago. There are moments where the marking dies down but then recently got brought back up. Even went to Labs to see if it’s anything health related but his labs came out normal according to the vets. I’m struggling to find out what else it could be!
My vet recently told me about cat behaviorists and how they might be able to help deter him from marking. But atleast the ones near me are pretty pricey, before I invest, has anyone had any luck with cat behaviorists? What do sessions usually entail? Any insight would be helpful!
