What are your favorite albums/songs from X Japan?

I found these guys when Marty Friedman mentioned them being an influence in an interview. Blue Blood is definitely THE X Japan album. One of my favorite Power Metal albums of all time. Jealousy is also a really good album. Then they have the one song “album”, Art of Life, a near 30 minute song with 7 minute piano solo.

“Endless Rain” is my favorite song and any other song of Blue Blood is great. My other standouts would be the title track and “Week End”. “Voiceless Screaming” and “Say Anything” off of Jealousy. Their first and last album has some tunes as well, just less standouts.

What are your favorite albums/songs from Razor?

Not my style of Thrash. It’s more punky like other countries 4th Big 4 members Anthrax, Tankard, Acid Reign. I like Crossover, but those bands seem to sit more inbetween it and general Thrash. I will say that I find “Evil Invaders” and especially “Hypertension” enjoyable.

What are your favorite albums/songs from King Diamond?

Heard “Welcome Home” in Clerks II when I was 10. I thought it was cheesy, but still cool. Took me forever to finally dive into the actual discography. I loved “Them” from their first minute with the 80s Horror movie feel mixed with the Traditional Heavy Metal. Love the follow-up, Conspiracy, as well. Cool to see a well done sequel to one of the concepts (I like to forget about Abigail II). And then I think I’d be in the minority for putting The Graveyard as high up as those classics. It’s really well done album, especially considering it was released in the more divisive era of 90s metal.

Again, love “Welcome Home”, but I’d say my overall favorite track is “Black Horsemen” from Abigail. Love the acoustic opening. “At the Grave” and “The Wedding Dream” are some favorites from Conspiracy. I’ve always really loved the track “Lucy Forever”. Just a nice ending track to an album to me.

What are your favorite albums/songs from Paradise Lost?

I’m an Icon guy, but Draconian Times is great too. Then there’s Shades of God and on their modern era end I’d say Tragic Idol. On their weirder end, One Second is an awesome album as well.

“Embers Fire” is my favorite and I can safely follow that up with “Hallowed Land” and “Say Just Words”. Some of the stuff the released in the 2000s like “Grey” and “The Enemy”. I also really “Serpent on their Cross” from their last album, Ascension. Every piece of it sounds great - especially Nick, the main riff, and that solo.

What are your favorite albums/songs from Judas Priest?

It took me forever to get into them and I certainly regret it. Still catching up with the Ripper and modern stuff - just in less of hurry for that stuff. But that being said Screaming for Vengeance is my pick. One few albums that lived up to its reputation for me. Followed closely by Stained Class and probably not too far behind that Defenders of the Faith. Remember Painkiller being a fantastic album as well.

I really enjoy “Some Heads are Gonna Roll”, “Electric Eye”, “Screaming for Vengeance”, “Painkiller”, and “Exciter” - to name some.

What are your favorite albums/songs from Voivod?

Big fan. I’d say from the classic line-up my pick would be Dimension Hätross. The albums before and after - Killing Technology and Nothingface - are masterpieces as well. Angel Rat is also an underrated gem - I thought it was great to see them adapt to the 90s. Their latest album - Synchro Anarchy - was also really enjoyable and well done.

I really love the Nothingface title track, “Tornado”, “Chaosmongers”, “Missing Sequence”, “Fix My Heart” and “Mind Block”. “Insect” from the E-Force era is also pretty cool.

What are your favorite albums/songs by W.A.S.P.?

I’m up to Headless Children and I’d say that is my favorite from them so far. Less Glam, much more straightforward metal. Honestly any of the first four albums are really well done. I’d say my favorite song is “Mean Man”.

What are your favorite albums/songs from Immortal?

I think mine would be Pure Holocaust, but Sons of Northern Darkness is close behind. And then of course there is At the Heart of Winter. With the more recent releases without Abbath, I’d definitely give it to Northern Chaos Gods.

“Tyrants” has been a big favorite for me. “Unholy Forces of Evil” from their debut has a mean, catchy riff too. “Unsilent Storms in the North Abyss” is probably favorite opener to any of their albums.

What are your favorite albums/songs from Stratovarius?

I, like many others, really enjoy Visions. Definitely THE Stratovarius album and “Black Diamond” is easily THE Stratovarius song. Twilight Time is a good early album before Kotipelto appeared in the line up. Later albums - I really enjoy Elysium. Showed they can still make a great album without Tolkki.

Outside of “Black Diamond” - there songs like “Eagleheart”, “Galaxies”, “Break the Ice”, “We Are the Future”, and more. The title track to Elysium is 20 minutes and I’ve listened to it on repeat.

What are your favorite albums/songs from Moonspell?

Another band I just recently gotten into this year. I really love The Antidote. Think it’s just a good balance of everything great about them, but stands out as something different. Their debut is absolutely solid - one of the best starts I’ve heard. And I’d with Extinct. It’s a later entry, but they are just as heavy as when they began.

“Love Crimes” is easily my favorite song from them. I really love the riff during the verses and the gothic spoken word chorus. “2econd Skin” from Sin Percado is another favorite. It’s a hit or miss song from a hit or miss album, but I really enjoy. Kind of similar to One Second by Paradise Lost. Anything off The Antidote - but “Everything Invaded” and “The Southern Deathstyle” are big go-to tracks for myself.

Where are your favorite albums/songs from Amorphis?

I just recently became a fan of this band and I’m fresh off of catching up to their most recent album in their discography. Far From the Sun is the only album I listened to from them and went “meh”. Otherwise, lots of solid material. Nailing it down at this current moment - I’d say my favorite albums are Am Universam, Tales from the Thousand Lakes, and Elegy.

I’ve been digging “Alone” and “Casteway” a lot. Really anything off of Am Universam - really scratches off a lot of ticks for me.

What are your favorite albums/songs from Carcass?

Heartwork is THE Carcass album and the title track is THE Carcass song. They’re also my favorite album and song. It’s cliche, but the hits are the hits for a reason. Symphonies of Sickness and Necroticism are also both really excellent albums. Surgical Steel and Torn Arteries are solid later releases.

What are your favorite albums/songs from Grave Digger?

Really excellent Power Metal band that gets a little less credit than their peers of the time. I really enjoy their albums Excalibur, The Grave Digger, and The Reaper. Their nineties era all around was fantastic and definitely their strongest sound, but the only albums I’d say aren’t the greatest are their initial material from the 80s.

So many songs - but I absolutely love Excalibur’s title track, “Son of Evil”, and “Dark of the Sun” to name some of favorites off the top of my head.

What are your favorite albums/songs from Napalm Death?

My favorite three albums from the band (in order) would be - Utopia Banished, Smear Campaign, and Enemy of the Music Business. Really enjoyed Utilitarian as well and thought it was probably their most experimental. Not a big fan of the Lee Dorian era, as much as I love Bill Sneer, it’s just not for me.

“When All is Said and Done” is definitely my favorite from them. It’s just really catchy and for a really intense song, has a nice, positive vibe. Not my favorite album, but “Suffer the Children” is absolutely the highlight of Harmony Corruptions. Utopia is front to back bangers, but I especially enjoy “Aryanisms”. Fun deep cut. Too many to list come to think of it.

What are your favorite albums/songs from Death Angel?

Really an under appreciated band. Always felt they should’ve at the very least been a large staple in the Metal World next to Testament. Also extremely impressive debut considering most, if not all members were teenagers.

Their debut is solid and a contender for my favorite. Definitely my favorite of the classic lineup. But on the modern in The Dream Calls for Blood is a banger.

I’d say “Voracious Souls” is my favorite song from them. “The Ultra-Violence” is definitely one of the more memorable instrumentals from a metal band to me. Always enjoyed “Stagnant” from Act III. Classic Rock vibes mixed with the band’s inherent Thrash.

If you had to pick one…which would it be?

I think I’ll be one in the minority and say Clouds is a more enjoyable album. “In a Dream”, the title track, and “Smell of Incense” live rent free in my head. Thought the harsher vocals were really done in it as well. Kind of gives me the same vibes as Shades of God. Being that kind of transition album.

Wildhoney will always be worth listening to regardless. It is a masterpiece in its own right. It being THE Tiamat album. And I’d argue that “Whatever That Hurts” is THE song. Really love some other tracks on the album like “Gaia” and “A Pocket Size Sun”.

No wrong answers 🤘🏾

Thrash Fans: Gary Holt or Jeff Waters

These two are absolutely killer guitarists. Both their bands have ups and lows in terms of catalogs, but when they shine - do they. They both bring some killer riffs and solos. Just wondered who you favored more. I’d probably lean Jeff because I’m a larger Annihilator fan and I think he’s a better soloist.
