Possibly the most ridiculously underrated tech/prog death band? Gigan appreciation post

American progressive / technical death metal band, also under the umbrella of “dissonant death metal”. Other than just being good, there are a few unique points about this band. First of all, it’s the only metal band I’ve ever heard to use musical instrument theremin. Actually, it’s the only band to use theremin that I’ve heard period. For those who never heard of it, it’s a musical instrument that is being played by waving hands in the air, creating certain ‘electronic effects’. Second, while a lot of other dissonant bands tend to lean into dark sound and lyrical themes (including some esoteric and occult, etc.), Gigan goes into drastically different direction with some crazy sci-fi space psychedelic trip stuff, in just really stands out. Starting from their second album they also developed their own unique production style, you really can’t confuse them with anybody else. If you are into stuff like Gorguts, Mitochondrion, Portal and Ulcerate, then Gigan is an absolute must have, personally I think Gigan blows away Ulcerate by very far.

Rediscovering my love for Melodic Death Metal

At one point, MDM was my favorite genre of metal but I've been into more OSDM recently so I have not been listening to MDM as much. But recently I've been falling back in love with MDM and have really been enjoying it. Here's a few of my favorites and feel free to recommend some more!

Be'Lakor (Stone's Reach): my goodness, if the word elegance came to life as a form of sound, it would sound like this album. Melodic with progressive tendencies and sounds utterly gorgeous. Probably my favorite MDM album of all time

Depresy (A Grand Magnificence): a recent discovery for me but a genuinely breathe taking one at that. Melodeath with lots of Doom metal influences, genuinely gorgeous in every way

Garden Of Shadows (Oracle Moon): this band was very much inspired by Depresy and the similarity is very clear. The distinguishing factor on this release in my opinion is the keyboards being used are utterly ethereal and the use of female vocals on the last track. Genuine masterpiece

A Canorous Quintet (Silence Of The World Beyond): my most recent discovery of this genre and a wonderful album. This album to me is melancholic but also somewhat triumphant at points. Kind of hard to describe but I love it regardless!

Fires In The Distance (Air Not Meant For Us): I think it's becoming apparent at this point that I REALLY love Doomy Melodeath and this album is genuinely one of the best examples. The song writing, production, vocals. Everything here is beautiful. There's a symphonic element of this album's sound as well and it makes this album all the more beautiful.

Intestine Baalism (An Anatomy Of The Beast): I'm sure if you're at all into MDM, you've heard this album before. But regardless, this album is absolutely crushing, heavy as all hell while being perfectly written and not sacrificing on melody whatsoever. If "Melodic Brutal Death Metal" was an actual genre, this album would perfectly fit that description.

Grenadier (Trumpets Blare In Blazing Glory): while this band is not really doing anything new as they're very clearly coping the sound of Arghoslent (but you know, without the racism), this band still rips. Another melodeath band that still has bite to it and is no less crushing than any OSDM band.

Top 5 Quintessential Old School death metal albums?

So I was curious to know what people considered to be the absolutely quintessential oldschool death metal albums, as opposed to the ones that you personally like the most. For example I personally prefer blessed are the sick to altars of madness but I would never try and make the case that blessed is more important or more foundational or more essential. I guess another way of asking the question is if somebody said to you they were starting out getting into old School death metal which albums would you tell them they absolutely had to have or listen to?

My top 5 would be:

  1. Altars of madness – morbid angel
  2. Leprosy – death
  3. Deicide - Deicide
  4. Effigy of the forgotten - Suffocation
  5. Left Hand Path - Entombed

I need some recommendations for the horniest metal tracks

I mean stuff like Closer by NIN, Hatefuck by Motionless in White, or Whore by In This Moment.

FMLYHM by Seether is a favourite but apparently they aren't metal

Punk or Hard rock is also welcome

This isn't for a Sex Playlist, no point making a playlist I won't use; I'm just looking for stuff to listen to while walking to the bakery for my plain pretzels.

Sigh - Scarlet Dream (Japan, 2001)

These guys flew under my radar for too long. They have a very avant-garde style psychedelic black metal that I haven't found anywhere else. This song is amazing, but the entire album is full of sick riffs that make you want to chant along with the vocalist. I am still mid way through listening to their discography, but I'm loving how they change their style between albums. Heavily recommend this to anyone who wants a great unique album. Any one have other bands that are like a breath of fresh air in their genre?

my boyfriend only likes heavy metal girls, and im the complete opposite

hi! my boyfriend and i have been together for a few years, and he's a metalhead through and through. he has introduced me to a lot of different bands over the years, and ive come to really enjoy it! hes been to metal festivals, and dresses in his band shirts and boots and leather jackets. im the complete opposite of him, and if i had to put a label on how i dress, it's probably hippie like

he makes fun of my music taste sometimes (which is all over the place! i like basically everything under the sun, and i like finding songs that make me feel SOMETHING) and all of the women he follows on ig are metalhead girlies. they are so beautiful, and sometimes i feel foolish. i have asked him about this before in terms of why he dates me, but he said it doesnt matter and yet it feels like it does :/ i feel worried that he feels like hes missing out on dating someone who's more into the scene than i am, and im scared! can anyone help me work thru this? thank u❤️

Do younger metalheads consider Slayer "Dad Metal?"

Because that's what this whippersnapper told me at work the other day. I feel personally violated, lol. I celebrate all metal old and new but Slayer will always be unfuckwithable. The Slayer shows I went to when I was younger were af of a lot more fun than watching a bunch of dweebs stand there with their phones in the air.

This is not rage bait

I know this is a nuanced topic and I know there is a lot of subjectivity to it. I am not trying to stir shit. I have ADHD and my brain needs to understand because I’m hyperfixated and can’t move on. Can someone please explain the differences between the main metal subgenres and give me band examples for each so I can better place the sound differences? I went to my first rock/metal festival and I am having a come down

Mark Morton from Lamb of God seems like one of the nicest dudes in metal

Never met him but in every video interview he’s in that I’ve seen he seems like a totally down to earth dude and just happy to be doing what he does. Not to mention a phenomenal player. I also love LoG’s latest album ‘Into Oblivion’.
