I bought a stolen laptop.
First of all I’m not a teacher (I just thought it would be appropriate to post this here). As I stated above, I bought a stolen laptop. Let me start from the beginning though. I was in the need (guess I still am) of a laptop that could run windows at a decent speed. My budget was pretty limited so I decided to look through FB Marketplace. As I was scrolling though the offers, I saw a Lenovo 13w (8gb of RAM, 256gb of storage) going for $100. It seemed pretty good for my budget so I decided to message the seller. It was kind of sketchy since he didn’t want to include a charger, but he was willing to lower the price so I let it pass. The other thing was that when I asked for more pictures, the top of the laptop said “property of NYC DOE”. I asked about it and he said that they let them keep them after they graduated. I didn’t really buy this so I (like any normal person) decided to ask the all knowing ChatGPT. I made the guy run some commands and other things that GPT told me to run, and they all came out fine. That and the fact that I was really in the need a laptop made me jump on the deal. Long story short, once I got back home and tried to reset it, it showed me that it was locked to the NYC DOE… I messaged the guy and he basically said screw you, and told me to just sell it if I wanted my money back. I was planning on just leaving it as a nice reminder of why I shouldn’t buy something if it doesn’t give me complete peace (and I don’t have the heart to sell it to someone else knowing it’s locked lol), but I thought I might as well just give it back in case a student needs it or something (I read that sometimes students need to return them to pass).
I’m in Brooklyn and I am available usually after 4pm. Also, if anyone knows of someone selling a cheap laptop that can run windows decently I would be really thankful if you could leave a reference. Thanks for reading and have a great rest of the day!
P.S. - I can send pictures and the Asset tag and other stuff if needed (this sub doesn’t let me post pictures)
