Are restaurants in PG charging for takeout containers now?

Last week I was eating at a very popular downtown restaurant that is always busy. When I asked for containers to take my leftovers home, I was told they were 50¢ each. I needed two containers, so it added another dollar to my bill.

I’ve eaten there many times over the years and have never been charged for leftover containers before, so it caught me off guard.

Maybe I’m just behind the times, but is this becoming common in Prince George? Are other restaurants charging for containers now too?

I get that costs have gone up for everyone, but going out is already expensive between the meal, drinks, taxes, and tip. Being charged to take home food I’ve already paid for feels a bit strange. If I didn’t want to pay for the containers, my only option would have been to leave the food behind.

I’m not trying to bash the restaurant. I like the place and I’ll likely go back at some point. I’m just curious whether this is becoming the norm around town or if this was a one-off experience.

What are you seeing at other restaurants in PG?
