Idaho/Montana BDR loop

For you regulars out there I’m the guy who was on the bdr loop last week with the cct gasket leak. Thought I’d write a quick follow up. Long story short everything worked out fine. The gasket kept weeping oil but it was not enough to require adding any oil mid trip.

On to the trip report. We rode from Missoula on to the
Idaho bdr and headed north into Canada, through Creston and Roosville and backdown the Montana bdr to Missoula. It was about 1500 miles. Highly recommend although the Idaho trail still had a lot of trees down that required some flexibility in the route. It also rained almost every day which made for more rushed camping. But no wildfires. The Montana bdr was a lot cleaner although we got some warnings about an un passable washout on the second leg (second from Canada). But this came from a team who were all on 600 lb “adventure bikes” so we took that into consideration and decided to check it out. There was indeed a bridge washout but we found a couple of boards and fashioned a bridge over the 10ft deep gap and went on our way. Any future dr riders on that section can use our bridge free of charge. And the guy we met doing the whole mtbdr on a t-dub. He was a badass.

Thanks again for all who helped with advice and viva la DR650!

Oil leak question

Hi all. I’m halfway through a 1000ish mile bdr loop (Missoula to Idaho bdr north into Canada and then swing back down the northern half of the Montana bdr back to Missoula) and this am I noticed some oil around the bottom half of the cylinder head. See pics. I’m hoping this is just the cam tensioner gasket and I can keep my eye on the oil level until I get back without screwing anything up.

Thoughts?

Hey all- I was walking out from my office today to take a call and of course took a sec to admire my precious baby. Thats when I noticed one of the fork covers looked suspiciously shiny on the bottom. I took the cover off, and noticed a little bit of oil pooling up in the seal well. About 3 weeks ago I did the complete cogent DDC fork kit/mojave rear spring. At the time, both fork seals looked perfectly fine, and the other fork still is still completely dry.

This is a 2018, with about 6500 miles on it. Maybe 50 miles since I did the DDC fork kit.

So...any suggestions on a course of action? When I replaced the springs, I did notice that the lip of the seal on both sides had spots where it curved away from the fork tube (you can see it in the picture here) but I saw than on both left and right side, and kinda wrote it off as "thats what they're supposed to look like".

Thanks in advance.
