Transmission Failure at 109k Miles
2023 Hybrid EX AWD model
At around 109k miles (so just barely 9k miles out of warranty) I started having an issue where when I would accelerate at low speed the car would jolt and it would enter what I can best describe as "safe mode" where accelerating would not shift to a different gear and the RPM would show 1.1 regardless of acceleration. Restarting the car would get it back to normal and the car would drive normally so at first I really thought this was just a glitch, until it happened again (and subsequently it would also happen while braking, though less often then when accelerating). It happened about four times until finally on the 5th one it gave a check engine light. I used a OBD2 Bluetooth adapter with Car Scanner Pro and once I saw it was that P0372 code I did a little bit of digging into what that was (gear 2 incorrect ratio) and once I had that info and verified that it was looking more like a transmission problem and definitely not a sensor or software glitch I took it to the dealer where they came back saying that the whole transmission needs to be replaced, quoted at around $7200 + tax (later the dealer brought it down to $6800 including tax)
I've had several cars in the past, most of them Chevys that I bought used that lasted way past 100k miles, 2 of which I even used to drive for Uber/Lyft and while they all gave me problems I didn't have such a big failure like this (one of them, a cheap little Chevrolet Cobalt , made it to 210k miles before I had to get rid of it). Meanwhile I bought this car brand new, cost almost $40k, and used to primarily commute to and from work (which is 72% highway) and the transmission makes it just past 100k.
