Just learned that my crazy grandmother’s ’fringe’ belief wasn’t…
So my family on my dad’s side were a branch of LDS that practiced polygamy until my mom’s generation. And the way my mom would talk about the things they believed, I always assumed they were just extremest or something. But no, after listening to the Mormon Stories podcast, turns out, they just don’t follow the post 80s version of the Mormon church.
My mom told me my late grandma (if you can call her that, she was a trash bag human) believed that people of color were fence sitters in heaven. That’s why they had the darker skin. As in there were the 1/3 of heaven that followed Satan. And people of color were those that didn’t decide and were just roped in with the ones that stayed. And god was punishing them. Or something like that. My mom said this like it was a crazy thing to think, and my grandma came up with it. But, turns out, that used to be what the main stream church used to believe. What Joe Smith taught if I remember correctly. And that’s why it took until almost the 80s for them to be let into the temple…
Feel free to correct me if I’m off a little, but that’s what I remember.
So ya, that’s fun. I’m sorry I stayed in a religion that believed this as part of its foundation. I didn’t know. And I’m ashamed of the money I gave them. Not a lot, mostly worked minimum wage before I left. But still.
