Thoughts on scripted fights for build up and plot

So ill be running my first campaign, and in one of the session write-ups, im devising a scripted early early. The purpose is to not only set up the main quest but also introduce a major antagonist, and show hes a threat.

Has anyone run a "scripted" encounter before? What are your thoughts on them? Is it common? How did your players react?

But most importantly: am I over thinking it?
