New company taking over old company
Hi everyone. This is my mom's situation and I'm wondering if there's anything that can be done for her.
The specific branch where she has worked for 23 years (she is 61) was just bought out by a smaller private firm. 30% of the staff there are 60+.
The previous company is not offering any severance packages and neither is the new company. By next week they want all the employees to either sign the new job contract - which is about a 10% decrease in salary, they will agree to a 3 month probation, and if terminated with or without cause employees will only get the minimum payments per ESA (which is about half of what shes owed i think?)
The other option is to not sign the new contract and to sue the old company for severance.
My mom is leaning towards just signing the contract and hoping she doesn't get let go during the 3 month probation, but I'm afraid most of the 60+ people will. I have no idea if this new company has enough money to pay everyone. I'm also worried if she goes down the lawyer route that she might wait a year or 2 and get not much return on investment.
I'm wondering if its worth it to go down the path of paying for an employment lawyer. Thanks in advance
