Hi all,
My frog, Dr. Pepper is not doing too hot. I took him to the vet on Friday because he hadn’t eaten in nearly four weeks and seemed more bloated than the typical piss balloon. I didn’t even notice his legs/abdomen. The vet did a thorough examination and found that his skin was super red and angry, especially around his back legs and lower abdomen. He also found that parts of his skin were bleeding just from being touched with a cotton swab😭.
The vet sent him home with oral Baytril suspension, silver sulfadiazine cream, and critical care carnivore for syringe feeding. Also had me clean his tank and replace the substrate with paper towels.
I feel so awful for not realizing how severe his symptoms were and not taking him in sooner. And I’m assuming it’s something in my husbandry (not enough cleaning?) that led him to develop this infection. I’m so scared that I’m going to lose him. I’ve only had him since October and he brings me so much joy.
Has anyone had their frog successfully beat red leg? He’s still very active and alert and seems to be tolerating his medicine well so far. I went out and got him an extra hide to fill with balled up paper towels that I replace daily so he can at least feel a little more relaxed and like he can still bury himself. First photo is him before he got sick. Second photo is of him at the vet, very distressed from the change in environment. He’s freaking out less now that I’ve got him the new hide.
I just don’t want to lose him.
