DAP 2 interview rant

I think I bombed my interview 😭 On my way to the interview I was listening to Lost Boys by Pheobe Bridgers and I started crying because of the current state of the world. When I got to the interview I felt super nervous but had a great convo with the 2 girls in the waiting room before being called in. At that point I was really comfortable and completely forgot about the song. Then the first question they asked me was:

"What's your favorite song?"

I started to tear up a little and in my head I was kept telling myself "LOCK IN!" so I explained the whole car thing and talked about how Lost Boys connected to the systemic issues of our education system (I know thats not exactly what the song is about but). I then talked about how I didn't believe administration at my school or society should view people who don't do well or "go down the wrong path" as an individual failure but rather a failure of the system. They said I was empathetic for that but I know they probably felt bad..

The rest of my interview I talked about influencing policy and initiatives at my school through the lens of class and helping those who fall through the cracks and connected it to how the south is politically underinvested in and needs advocates who believe the working class here is worth fighting for (career path). We also talked about what it means to be a leader so I talked about service leadership and my experience. I feel like my personality and values really showed during the rest of it (it was all very conversational).

At the end it was basically about how comfortable I was doing ED and the schools I wanted to go to. That went okay.

I'm just really worried about the beginning because I know that was an awful way to start off 😭 did anyone else have a really awful start to their interview but moved on?

Also another thing if you're interviewing, DON'T LISTEN TO SAD MUSIC ON YOUR WAY THERE!!!

Posse ROI

I found out I'm a Posse semifinalist and now I'm seriously weighing the ROI of Posse with the debt I'd be in if I did go to a partner school. Can any alums or current scholars give their insight?

Nomination in Metro Atlanta

Hello! I'm a high school senior who's interested in Posse and looking for a nomination! Unfortunately, I just found out my counselor didn't choose nominate me. Here's a little bit about me:

-Im currently applying for grants for my educational justice project bridging the asian community with other communities of color here in the deep south through history. Here's my little spiel:

Regional history of the Deep South is incredibly important to me because it's the most diverse region in America, but it's also the least politically invested in. A lot of people see the South as a lost cause, but I know that the people here work just as hard, if not harder, toward a better South. My favorite quote from John Steinbeck says: “I faced the South with dread. Here, I knew, were pain and confusion and all the manic results of bewilderment and fear. And the South being a limb of the nation, its pain spreads out to all America.” From the Chinese Americans who took on the Reconstruction South to build the Transcontinental Railroad, to the Southern working class who lost their lives for the labor rights we enjoy across America today, the South holds our country up, and I advocate that its people are still worth fighting for. As someone of black and asian decent, too often do I see my communities against each other. Where our region is stigmatized anypolitically underinvested in, the only thing we truly have is community when working toward a better South.

-I wrote a paper on the voting strategies of the Deep South as well: https://official-iwa-research-paper.tiiny.site

-I'm a county representative (1 of 3 selected) for my county leadership program. I learn how to network, lead from the ground up, and cultivate leadership within my community! With my program I attend monthly county sessions where I learn, I also get to go to networking events with business leaders and government officials!

-I graduated from my county legal program where over the summer I viewed 14 criminal/civil trials as well as preliminary hearings. I worked with judges, senators, and other legal professionals to learn all about the process of policy and law. Its also where I found that I didn't want to be a litigatior, I want to be a policymaker!

-My intended major is either public policy or political science!

I'd really appreciate a nomination! The deadline is tommorow (August 7th). Please send over a dm if you want to nominate me. Thank you!

SMILE Gwinnett Information/Advice

Hello!

I was recently accepted into the SMILE Gwinnett Program, but there isn't much online showing the experience. Are there any former alumni of SMILE that can say what its like? Are there any tips on how to gain internships/connections through SMILE?

I'm interested in doing labor or employment law in the future, if that helps.

Thanks!
