I have an idea for a project but not sure if it's a good idea and would like advice on yarn/hook

I had the idea for a top with granny squares at the bottom to make a trim and found the third image what shows what I'm kinda going for. I have the pattern for the Athena top without bottom ribbing, image one, and and the granny square I want. I want to first of all know if this is a bad idea since I know the two things I'm putting together are fairly different from the reference image. I'm intermediate/beginner crocheter for context. I also wanted yo know what yarn you would recommend in terms of material and weight as well as hook size. Ideally I would like this breathable.
