Heat pump in the winter

I live in central Indiana in a house that is a little less than 1800 sq/ft and built in the 70s. and this winter we had a couple months was well below freezing with almost a month bellow 0f the heat pump is my only source of heat other than a fireplace which is old and ineffective at heating anything more than the living room. My problem is that I’m a renter so I can’t install a furnace and I hade electrical bills around 700-800$ a month during this period. What do you recommend I do to supplement my heating so I’m not paying half my rent worth of electricity a month and not freeze? I’ve been considering a pellet stove that can hook up to my chimney and was told to buy space heaters and focus on specific rooms to keep warm instead of the whole house.
