What was the perspective of early Muslims and the Quran on the marriage contract/nikah? Were there rigid rules, such as the requirement of a wali, a specific number of witnesses, or the necessity of an imam, as we see today? Or was the mutual consent of the parties and the public announcement of the relationship considered sufficient for the marriage to be valid? Are there any academic studies conducted on this subject?
