Linda/Matrix is way more interesting than Kara
the title is provocative, i know, but let me explain.
i recently started reading the first 23 issues of peter david’s supergirl run and i’m loving this comic way more than i ever expected.
this comic has an original and interesting status quo supported by enjoyable characters and an excellent writer, that being peter david.
comparing linda to kara honestly isn’t even close for me: kara is a character without a strong personal identity, mostly carried by the entire superman mythos.
the only things that gave the character at least some identity were her tv series, where kara is basically just a female superman, and the 8-issue comic “woman of tomorrow”; the problem is that we’re talking about a character that has existed since 1959 and that, despite disappearing after crisis until the early 2000s, has never really managed to build a strong identity or an interesting status quo over all these years.
linda manages to do in just her first issues what kara never managed to do in years and years. i think the main reason for this comes down to the writing itself: linda had the “luck” of being written by peter david, a legendary writer in american comics, while when it comes to kara i struggle to remember many great writers attached to her.
i still have a lot of issues left in this run and i don’t know where it will ultimately go, but i’m already convinced that linda is a far more interesting character than kara.
