Where do we go from here? 1.5 hours of crying...

On Monday night, our baby (5months + 1week) would not go back down after night feeds and started babbling/fussing only a few minutes after we put him in his crib. He was hard to settle during these wakeups even with rocking/breastfeeding. We had previously been trying to hold off on sleep training to see if his sleep might improve on its own, but this made the situation untenable and we decided we needed to make a change.

Cue last night when we decided to try to let him CIO in his crib in his own room (we moved him to his own room last week without event). After putting him down dry and fed, he cried and cried for an hour and a half with no end in sight. After the 1.5 hours of almost solid wailing (only ~2 second breaks to try to catch his breath), it started to feel cruel so I did end up going in to breastfeed him. He then slept until 3am, fed and went back to sleep easily, and slept until 6 before being up for the day.

We are at a loss for what to try tonight. I know it is very important to be consistent and not pick your baby up out of their crib while they're crying for sleep training to work, but I wasn't mentally prepared for the crying to last 90+ minutes. Where do we go from here?
