Is Kse’s backstory really as simple as told? [novel]

I think kse described the life he had back in his home was pretty normal/good, but later on in chapter ~190+ didn’t he basically not care if he died? Also when braun kidnapped him he asked if kse actually wants to go home which makes me wonder that its not as normal as whats told? Idk if im just thinking too deeply about it and his backstory is not that important. I also didnt finish the story (~240) but im just curious if it dives deeper into what his life
