People, Places, and Things

Just watched People, Places, and Things yesterday at Proscenium, Rockwell. Si Bella and Gabby ang leads.

I was actually hoping to watch Bella, but Gabby was the one we ended up seeing. And honestly, it felt like a blessing in disguise because sobrang galing ni Gabby! She was so effective in inhabiting her role—you could feel the character breathe through her performance. There was such conviction in the way she delivered her lines and carried each moment.

My friend, on the other hand, watched Bella. Hmm… did anyone watch her also last night? What do you guys think about her acting?

In any case, I really enjoyed the production’s—especially the director’s—take on the show. I had my reservations about it being a staged reading, but in this case, it felt like so much more than that. The lighting, the use of chairs, the sound design, and the overall staging were terrific. Everything felt intentional, and the simplicity of the staging somehow made the performances stand out even more.

A lovely reminder that theatre doesn’t always need elaborate sets to transport you somewhere. Sometimes, all it needs is a good actor, a well-timed light, a chair, a sound—and a story worth telling.
