Monarchs Review #25: What would James I think of Charles I?

The purpose is to surmise what monarchs would think of their successors based on their respective personalities, leadership styles, how they thought of their heirs while alive, and how their successor’s reign ultimately turned. Y’all likely know much more than me when it comes to pre-Tudor monarchs, and so I think it’ll be an interesting way to evaluate these monarchs.

RULES:

  1. Say what you think the predecessor would’ve liked about their successor.
  2. Say what you think predecessor would’ve disliked about their successor.
  3. Give what you think their overall rating/review would be based on these out of 10

Be as thorough as you wish.

Yesterday, Elizabeth gave James a cool 7/10; not bad. Today, James I reviews his son Charles I. I think he’d be shocked to say the least. What do y’all think?

Yesterday, Mary I reviewed her sister Elizabeth I and gave her a 4/10 for reasons mostly related to religious policy. Today, Elizabeth I reviews her cousin and Scottish successor James VI of Scotland, who reigned as James I in England.

Yesterday, Henry VIII gave his son a 7/10 (on average) and seemed the most upset about the revised succession law. Nonetheless, Jane Grey didn’t reign long enough to be included on the list, and so we skip to Mary, the first undisputed Queen regnant of England. Today, Edward VI rates her reign. I can say that Edward would firstly not be too pleased about Mary having the crown at all nor her measures to restore Catholicism to England. What do y’all think?

Yesterday, there was some debate topics like Henry VIII’s annulment and spending. It’s still pretty much agreed that Henry VII wouldn’t be very proud of his son and his historical reputation, so a 4/10 on average it is. Today, Henry VIII reviews his son and successor Edward VI. His could also extend to his regency council. Fair warning: We will be skipping Lady Jane Grey tomorrow since she is too disputed and reigned for too short a period to have any significant impact.

Yesterday, Richard III reviewed Henry VII, and while he probably wouldn’t doubt Henry’s successes it was agreed that killing him at Bosworth would’ve clouded his judgement. So a 3/10 it is! Today, we have Henry VII reviewing his infamous son, Henry VIII.

This is where I start to give some of my own input: I don’t imagine Henry VII would be so happy about Henry’s annulment with Catherine of Aragon and his general mistreatment of her. He would also be horrified by Henry’s break with the Catholic Church and the English Reformation as a whole. I don’t imagine he would’ve supported any of his son’s subsequent marriages either. What do y’all think?

Yesterday, Edward IV chewed out Richard III and gave him a dismal -∞/10. So I think it’s fair to say that he wasn’t very happy with him. Today, Richard III reviews the first monarch of the House of Tudor, Henry VII.

Yesterday, Edward IV reviewed his son Edward V, or rather the regency under the Duke of Gloucester. It was agreed that though his reign was dismal, it was hardly the fault of Edward V since he was a child with a very brief reign. So today, as suggested yesterday, Edward IV will return to review Richard III, his son’s usurper. There was already some discussion from yesterday so today we can continue + so other thoughts on what might also be positive!

Yesterday, Henry V reviewed his son Henry VI and the conclusion was that he would’ve been bitterly disappointed in his unlucky son’s reign and horrified at the outbreak of the War of the Roses; a 3/10 was the average, many thanks to the two commenters! Now, Henry VI reviews Edward IV. Since Henry lived to see Edward IV’s first reign, I’m much more interested in his thoughts on the second reign of Edward IV. Regardless, it seems like a no-brainer of course… So I challenge everyone to ALSO come up with some positive opinions Henry VI might’ve had for Edward IV’s reign!

Yesterday, Henry Bolingbroke reviewed his son Henry of Monmouth. Last post didn’t really get any ratings or much details of likes vs dislikes, so I assumed by the overwhelming positivity that Henry IV would’ve given his son a 10/10? Today, Henry of Monmouth reviews his own son Henry VI, the first monarch to suffer the War of the Roses.

So, there was some heat in the comments last time over Henry II’s review of Richard the Lionheart. I learned that Henry wouldn’t have minded Richard’s Crusades over his presence in England as he was planning it himself. I was expecting the average to come to 8, but there was enough lower scores for it to come to around 7/10. Today, we have Richard I’s review of the reign of his brother John Lackland. I am so excited to read these tbh cause I feel like y’all are gonna go in on him. And I recently read that John was Henry II’s favorite son….Geez, I can just imagine Henry’s review. Personally, with the way King John reigned, Richard is still cussing him out in the afterlife. What do y’all think?
