How to get rid of fungus gnats in bioactive vivarium?

I’ve heard to let the soil dry out…but won’t that kill all the isopods and springtails that I have inside!? I’ve sprayed mosquito bits twice this week, but I’m afraid that it’s not getting in the nooks and crannies of all the bark I’ve got in there.

One month of taming new juvenile Halmahara BTS!

We’ve had this guy for exactly one month! Told he was “farm bred”, but I’m pretty sure most of those are really just wild caught. So far, he’ll only come onto my hand if I lure him with food, which I do everyday lol. This is as far as I’ve gotten so far with handling (also that’s food on his nose lol).

Any advice on picking him up without luring him? Does this seem like good progress? Also - do we think I’m safe to take off the gloves based on his body language? 😂 I only wear them because the previous owner said he can be bitey.

Any insight into male or female?

He is an Ornate Philbyi and is almost one year old. I was told he’s a male by the breeder. Just looking to make sure. Thanks!

Baby Ackie monitor does this tail wiggle whenever he’s hunting for crickets 😂

While I’m here - any advice on getting him to eat anything else lol? All he’ll go for is crickets.

Juvenile uro not defecating, not basking, barely eating…but looks fine??

For the last few weeks my juvenile Uromastyx Ornata Philbyi (captive bred) who I’ve had for 4 months now, has for 3 weeks now just been hiding 24/7, not basking at all (I know this because I work from home beside his tank), and barely eating. I’ve taken him out of hiding a few times to examine him and he looks fine, acts fine. His belly is not hard to the touch. I don’t know what could be wrong?

He can’t possibly be brumating because he’s only like 7 months old and temps haven’t changed.

Basking spot temp (with a temp gun) - 120-135
Basking spot ambient - 108
Cool side ambient - 89
Sand and rocks as substrate
Tune UVB bulb along with halogen heat bulb and LED for light

My new BTS came out on his own for the first time today (1.5 weeks of having him) and he’s looking at me all weird! Haha

I wonder what he’s thinking 😂 I don’t think he’s stressed out. I’ve never grabbed him or picked him up, just let him come out on his own terms.

Just got my BTS one week ago and he’s already coming up to the glass to eat!

Super excited. He was terrified when we first got him, idk how he’s warmed up so fast!

Baby Ackie Monitor finally accepts pets!

I’ve had this little guy for about 3 months now, and when we first got him, he would dart and hide the second I walked into the room. I started consistently tong feeding and placing my hand in the enclosure and just letting him come to me on his own terms. If he wanted to climb onto my hand, great. If not, I left him alone.

Now he comes out of his burrows on his own, walks up to the glass, onto my hand, and even enjoys little pets! I think he’s almost ready to start coming out of the enclosure.

For anyone with a nervous baby Ackie, take this as a little encouragement—they really can come around with patience. When we first brought him home, it honestly felt like this would never happen!

Juvenile uromastyx doesn’t eat much/not much activity?

I’ve had a juvenile captive bred uro Philbyi since March of this year. Since I have had him, he’s never been that active. Maybe he will trot a few laps around his tank and then go back into his cave. He’s in the cave for 90% of the day, and he also never digs. Barely ever basks. He’s also never been much of eater, he will eat maybe one flower or one dandelion leaf every few days and snack on seeds lentils maybe once in between (maybe). Is there something wrong? When I take him out he’s very happy and active.

This is his tank. The ambient temp reads 96 but the basking spot with my heat gun says 133. I know that’s hot but u have no idea how to get it lower. Any recommendations?

I have a heat/uvb bulb (mixjoy from Amazon, a normal UV bulb, and an LED light). All the bulbs were new as of April.

Tips for keeping my new bioactive tank, bioactive!?

I just started a bioactive vivarium for my Ackie monitor and also for my blue tongue skink. There are a couple snake plants in both. I put a few cultures of springtails and about 60 isopods into both. Both enclosures are very moist and they have bark/leaf litter. My issue is that it seems that the buggers have disappeared!! They are no where to be found after a week.

Should I be sprinkling calcium powder inside too? Adding extra food sources? Adding more springtails/isopods?

Also, any advice on what type of isopods are the best to use?

Thanks!

What plants is everyone putting in their BTS enclosure?

I just added springtails and about 60 isopods to my Halmahera Blue Tongue Skink enclosure and want to add some plants in. Any ideas on plants that will resist being trampled over?

New Blue Tongue Skink - behaviour?

I just got a juvenile Halmahara blue tongue skink a few days ago. He will eat bananas from tongs (and only bananas lol). Based on this video, does he look scared or tense with the tongue licking? I’m new to skinks, so trying to understand their body language.

I have not tried to hold him yet as he seems timid, and want to let him come up to me on his own.

Any idea why my sunflowers went from thriving to wilting in two days?

I’ve kept them outside and it’s been extremely hot in southern Ontario the past couple days (30 degrees Celsius and higher with full sun). Could it be because of the heat? Is there anything I can do?

I added in a bit of water yesterday, but again, only had them for a few days now.

New to owning plants! Thanks :)

Help! This giant mushroom just sprouted in my Monitors bioactive enclosure!!!

I have a bioactive enclosure with organic topsoil and play sand. I added two spider plants last week, plus isopods and leaf litter yesterday. This mushroom appeared overnight—it definitely wasn’t there last night. Any idea what it is?

Is it indicative of anything concerning? There is a baby Ackie Monitor inside, and I don’t want it to harm him.

Thanks!

How many hexopods do I need for my 50 gallon baby Ackie Monitor vivarium to make it bioactive?

I’ve added in a few spider plants amongst a bunch of other decor/rocks/hides, I have 6 inches of organic topsoil mixed with playsand. The substrate is very very moist. I added in a bunch of leaf litter. I

I just bought 24 hexopods yesterday and dropped them into the tank, but I don’t see any of them anywhere. Should I buy more as a base to get the bioactivity going? Any other advice to keep them alive? Im not too concerned about the monitor eating them since he refuses to eat anything other than crickets unless he’s absolutely starving.

Excuse my ignorance - I am entirely new to bioactive enclosures. Thanks!

Baby uromastyx tail covered in poop?

I’ve had my baby uromastyx Philbyi for about four months. About a month ago, I fed him the yellow dandelion flower, and it seemed to give him diarrhea. I stopped feeding the flowers and stuck with only the leaves, and the diarrhea went away.

The problem is that the underside of his tail is still covered in dried, crusted-on feces. He’s very tame to hold, but too quick for me to clean it off with a cloth safely. Would it be okay to soak him in a shallow warm bath to loosen it? Can I add anything like baking soda to the water, or should I use plain water only?

Filler while on accutane?

Anyone been on accutane and gotten filler or botox while on it? I’ve been on accutane for like 8 months. I haven’t had any adverse effects other than dry lips (which is manageable). I used to get lip filler and botox before accutane, and I’ve been wanting to get some again while I’m on it, but I know they say you shouldn’t.

Has anyone done this? And if so, any bad reactions? Thanks!
