How to make sure Uro won’t burn their stomach on hot surface particularly on the their basking spots?

I want to get a uromastyx and am in the research/planning phase. I know many reptiles aren’t good at sensing heat on their undersides and can get burnt so how do you make a basking spot with 110-120° temps without burning your uro’s belly? Is there any particular materials to use for their basking platforms, or any other advice? TIA

Shedding tail or rot?

This is Mustard. He is a Yellow Niger Uro and i am a first time Uro owner. I am unsure if this is just shed or if his tail is rotting? I have read that it is possible if their humidity is too high and their shed gets stuck. His humidity is at 20%, and i have 2 humidifiers, one in my room next to his tank and one reptile humidifier in his tank to assure it is not too wet in there for him! I have looked up photos of tail rot and every photo online seems to be very extreme, and i want to make sure that he is taken care of or if he does have it that i am catching it early!! I also clean his tank of food and poop every other day as it is usually not dirty enough to be cleaned every day! Thank you!

I noticed a 14yr old for adoption, any warnings or advice?

I saw an allegedly 14 yr old female "yellow" uromastyx that was surrendered and up for adoption on morphmarket. I put in my inquiry about her. Besides usual good husbandry (I have been researching and aquiring what is needed) is there any warning or caveats I should know, as a person who never had a uromastyx (i have other reptiles & amphibians) about getting a lizard this old? Are these her sunset years, is this not old for them really, or anythings she might need for age or things I should not do? I put the photos that the seller had on the listing on my post. TIA

Uromastyx aegyptia microlepis

My newest addition has been named. He's adjusting quickly and eating well. Getting braver each day and hiding less each day.

My new uro!!

My 8 month old female ornate uromastyx, have had her for 5 days now and she started out surfing glass quite a lot but now is burrowing and more calm. Any tips for a first time uro keeper??? She hasn’t really been eating much but she’s still alert and healthy.

Put in the time...

When you have new reptiles that don't know or trust you yet one of the most important things you can do is put in the time. Spend time time around them without harrassing or chasing them. Just be in their presence and become a non-threatening part of the environment. Be still and quiet, and eventually, they start to explore despite your presence. You can offer specialty food items/treats to get them to associate you with positive interactions and slowly build that trust. Eventually, you can sit with your hand in the enclosure and let them explore it on their own time. Put food in your hand and let them come to you. They should eventually lose their fear of you, and if you're patient and slow, you'll gain a new friend.

M’Lord

As a picker, it drives me CRAZY to leave his shed alone and just let Giuseppe take his time. But at least he’s being fashionable this go.

My resident creature of greed and stink

Back home for the summer, expect to see more of Lennie.

He's giving me the stink eye because he needs to poop and he blames me for it.

Thinking of getting a uromastyx, looking for enclosure inspo. Can I see your tanks 👀

For context, when I was 18 I had a uromastyx. I wasn’t planning on getting one, but I worked at PetSmart at the time and this poor uromastyx had been in our store for a year at this point and not only that but they were feeding him crickets and the max temp in his small enclosure was only about 75-80°.

[Crazy side story about the crickets: when I got moved from cashier to pet care associate and learned he was eating crickets, I started giving him a freeze dried veggie mix instead (which still isn’t ideal but we didn’t have any fresh greens in store). Well one day we got audited and the auditer saw the veggies in his tank and asked why they were there, I explained to him that uromastyx’s and vegetarians. He told me all the reptiles are only supposed to eat crickets and made me take out the veggie dish. I put it back once he left but I always thought that was insane.]

So anyways, because of all this I ended up buying him to hopefully give him a better home. I had a 20g tank and was planning on upgrading as he grew. The hottest spot in the tank reached about 110° with the rest of the tank around 90° if im remembering right. He was terrified of me at first but eventually got used to me and I even got to hand feed him his favorite dandelion flowers.

Unfortunately, I went away for a week and had my mom watch him for me. I had one of those enclosures with the front opening doors and apparently she didn’t close the doors all the way and he got out. My mom found him dead hiding in my room somewhere.

My heart has been broken about this ever since. I was planning on having him for 30 years or however long he lived, but his life got cut so short and I still haven’t forgiven myself.

Im 30 now and have been thinking of getting another uromastyx. I want to make sure I have all and any updated info regarding their care which I will definitely fully research again beforehand but im looking for some inspiration for a potential enclosure.

I take very good care of my pets. I currently have hermit crabs living in a 40g tank with 60g topper we built ourselves and they are thriving.

I was smitten on meeting my first Uromastyx!

I was visiting a nice local petshop and they had this fella, who had already been in their care for a year! He is a 3yr old CB Uromastyx ornata. They let me hold him and my heart melted. He was so chill and licked my hand. I think I found my dream lizard. It was a magical experience and I look forward to having one someday.

Pretty confident my Uro is a Male but wanna confirm!

I'm pretty sure my little guy, Spino, is a male but I wanted to double check since I am thinking about getting him a buddy, female, on one of my upcoming paychecks.

So I get to be a member of the club....

My wife got me this fella for my birthday/anniversary, and he arrives next Thursday. Sold as an Arabian giant, which would be Uromastyx aegyptia microlepis, but there has been some debate on other sites that he may be the Egyptian (Uromastyx aegyptia aegyptia).

I welcome anyone with significant uromastyx experience to share their thoughts as to which it is, but please explain why you think whatever it is you think as well.
