I (26 F) and ex (25 M) broke up after 8 years. This past week he has asked me to contribute to his “practical needs” for the week of around $300 (he states gas, groceries and work expenses). I told him I won’t be contributing as I don’t live with him anymore and haven’t for 2 months and we aren’t together.
He says “In what world is 2 months enough time for me to process the breakup, stabilize my emotions, stabilize my finances, stabilize the house, stabilize everything, restructure my life”.
He doesn’t have a steady income as he is doing a project and doesn’t have a set income time frame. I have a consistently paying job and am currently staying with family. I don’t feel like I’m obligated to give him anything but I’m unsure if this is typical after a break up for a long term relationship.
(If more background or context is needed i can add kore)
EDIT: Many were asking about the lease situation. We shared a lease (our names weren’t on it) but the place is owned by his family, so he’s still living there. The utilities and other bills are in my name only. For the last year or so I’ve been the only one paying the rent and other bills, (he’s been unemployed during that time). When I left (Feb) I had paid the rent and utilities for march since he wasn’t working. He since started a project but it seems he ran out of the money he got from there.
** I’ve scheduled for the utilities and everything to be taken out of my name in two weeks. The companies said they shut them off early in the am and I didn’t want to leave him without utilities.
*** I haven’t blocked him since I still have things at the house and an issue with transferring a car title to me (when we broke up he said the car was mine and that I could leave my things there until I found a permanent place. He said he wouldn’t make the breakup hard but I see now that he’s not gonna keep his word. I’m going today with family to get the rest of my things and the title, hopefully)
