Cat post-megacolon surgery, struggling with bowel management

25F, South Africa — Cat post-megacolon surgery, struggling with bowel management

My cat Archie (just over 1 year old, neutered male) had megacolon and had his colon removed in February. He’s been recovering ever since, but I’m really struggling to manage his bowel movements.

He’s incontinent about half the time and completely normal the other half. I’ve been back to the vet, who recommended adding pumpkin to his food — which I’ve been doing. He’s currently on Hills i/d with pumpkin mixed in, but I’m concerned because this is the same food he was on before his surgery when he was dealing with constipation.

We haven’t had a firm stool at all since his surgery.

I have two questions:

1.	Food recommendations — Can anyone suggest an alternative to Hills i/d? I’m uneasy keeping him on the same food he was on pre-surgery.

2.	Food additives — What else can I mix into his food to help firm up his stools and support better bowel movements?

Vet is accessible and we’ve already consulted them — just looking for community experience alongside the professional advice. Thank you!

I’m looking for a Dispensary that isn’t going to charge me R150 plus per gram. I usually buy bulk of 30 g to 50 g for my month. Doesn’t need to be in the city itself. I’m pretty willing to take a drive.
