How do people actually search and apply for good 6-month internships in India? Feeling confused about the process

I'm currently a 3rd year engineering student from Mumbai and my college has a mandatory 6-month internship in Semester 8 (Jan 2027 – June 2027). My Semester 6 has just been completed.

I'm honestly confused about how students actually find good internships and how early I should start applying.

My college has some strict internship rules:

  • Only one internship allowed once accepted
  • No switching internships later
  • Self-secured internships are allowed but need T&P approval
  • Internship can become PPO-based, which affects future placement participation
  • We need proper documents like offer letter, completion certificate, logbook, etc.
  • Internship must be relevant to our domain and academically valid

I’m mainly interested in:

  • Software Development
  • AI/ML
  • Data Analytics
  • Backend/Cloud
  • Full Stack Development
  • Java

A few things I’m confused about:

  1. Where do students actually find good internships? LinkedIn? Careers page? Referrals? Internshala? Cold emails? Hackathons?
  2. When should I realistically start applying for Jan 2027 internships? Right now feels too early but I also don't want to be late.
  3. How do students shortlist companies? There are so many startups/service companies/product companies and I can'’t tell which internships are genuinely useful.
  4. Is it better to target:
  • Big companies
  • Mid-sized product startups
  • Small startups where you get more actual work
  1. How important are referrals for internships in India?
  2. What projects/skills actually help students get shortlisted these days?

I do have some decent projects already, but I still feel lost about the overall process and timeline.

Would really appreciate advice from seniors or people who already completed 6-month internships.
