i (20 F) heard my dad (54? M)complaining about how my mom (46? F) hasn’t cleaned their room yet and how she hasn’t cleaned another room, not asking her once if she needed help knowing how busy she is with 5 kids. He then started talking about how she always does the dishes because he saw her doing them so i told him how mom isn’t the only one who does them and i do as well. He started to get mad, he just hates when someone “talks back”. mom was trying to tell him i didn’t have an attitude and kept trying to tell him what i said but he was being rude, continuously cutting her off, and yelling so i yelled and said that he doesn’t ever want to listen to anyone ever; so he started to walk and follow me down the hallway trying to provoke the situation more. We ended up in the hallway because i was trying to leave for work, but he kept going on and on and called my friend a bitch (she was driving me to work) saying “and get that bitch out of here” so i said “she’s not a bitch you’re the bitch” my brothers started to hold my dad back from me because he got up in my face with balled fist, started yelling more and tried to break my brothers away so i just slapped him…not hard, it was literally a graze against his face with my fingertips. He then proceeded to push my mom onto the floor start choking me, only letting go because he was ripped away by my brothers and friend. it hurt, and it left scarring. all i really remember was me hitting the ground because i tripped from everyone breaking him off of me. the cops were called and we all gave out statements. the police told me no arrests were going to be made today and to next time “do the dishes”. My dads behavior isn’t new, he has threatened to hurt be before a lot, but this is the first time he’s put hands on me. Unfortunately my mom and brothers try to normalize his behavior, not really worrying about the marks on my neck or the whole altercation in the first place. i have been over a friends house for the past 3 days, and so far neither my mom or brother doesn’t seem to care too much. I went home for a little bit to grab something, and all my mom said to me was, “why are you making that face”. I will have to go home in a few days. why is my mom trying to downplay the situation? why is everyone who was involved (aside from my friend) trying to act like it wasn’t a big deal? Am i/was i overreacting? I want to leave and will, but i am currently looking for a better job to save more money.
